Future eBay DSR Page ''Not in the Stars''?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

It appears that eBay may be testing a new buyer interface for leaving Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs). A screen shot sent to us shows a drop-down box with five choices for rating the seller, but no stars or numeric values (1-5) appear on the screen. In this example, the choices for, "How accurate was the item description?" give the following choices (same options as before):

- Very Accurate
- Accurate
- Neither Inaccurate nor Accurate
- Inaccurate
- Very Inaccurate

eBay is judging sellers on a numeric system, but this screenshot does not display numbers to buyers. Is this a glitch or a precursor?

When sellers communicate to buyers about feedback, they refer to the numeric star ratings. Sellers are concerned they may have to reword their communications to buyers if this screen becomes the norm.

After 10 years with a 99 % feedback rating, I have been notified that my rating has been lowered and my search standing also lowered. Due to:

l Negative feedback where purchaser failed to follow feedback rules and give me an opportunity to refund money; and

High mailing cost because I mail duplicate items separately for the protection and integrity of the purchase.

By lowering my search standings, EBay is only hurting themselves, their sale will be less as will their commissions.

This is fixing ebay ?   Telling buyers that a 4 is as good as a 5.   Or isn't this just as many corp. do when they toss a little twist in to make hitting that bonus just a little out of reach.   Thanks for the carrot just out of reach ebay.   Out on a thin limb and still sawwwing away.

Seller objections to DSR's are only partially addressed if this change comes to fruition.

The problem remains how DSR's are used by eBay to rank sellers listing visibility and the resulting practice of buyers extorting sellers over pricing.

eBay trashed the two way feedback system over claims of retaliatory feedback, even though they admit it was not wide spread.

How much longer will sellers have to suffer financial losses brought on by buyers extortion? This change will do nothing to stop the exodus of small sellers who suffer when one transaction goes bad and their scroes take a hit.

As long as buyers are able to adversely effect a sellers listing visibility using the DSR rating process, the system is dysfunctional and unfair.

Face it, retaliatory feedback, while wrong, did not impact a buyer financially. eBay has issued all buyers total immunity while encouraging the acts of an ever growing number of Non Paying Bidders, while sellers are left to suffer lost sales due to reduced visibility.

Add the fact that small sellers with fewer transactions are more severely impacted when visibility becomes lowered, and the system is flawed beyond repair, as sellers with higher transaction volume can more easily absorb abusive scores.

The continued use of DSR's to score listing visibility is a disservice to sellers which can result in  financial harm when listings become lowered in visibility.

This change does nothing to address the financial ramifications and extortion that the policy and ratings encourage.

What is with eBay executives? Do they really  have degrees or are they simply delusional with fever?

Nothing really changes here from what I can see.  Except now I will have to throw out all those slips I printed explaining the "star" system and come up with something new, this is maddening!!!

The "shipping and handling" DSR is simply STUPID!  DO I CONTROL OR SET PRICES FOR SHIPPING COSTS?  Even auctions where I have FREE SHIPPING I still get less than a 5 from UNEDUCATED BUYERS!!!

Lets get real eBay and turn this BS around FAST and I mean FAST!!! You have trashed one of the most unique and fun places on the web... SHAME ON YOU!!!

NO change.

Same ambiguous wording. Same result.

The ''Shipping cost'' category has got to go. It's not relevant. Never was, never will be. Same for the ''Shipping time'' category, that's even less relevant.

What, exactly, is the difference between a "very accurate" description and an "accurate" one? It's either accurate or it isn't! And how can a description be "neither inaccurate nor accurate"? By not existing at all?

This is even more stupid than the current DSR system!

Has anyone contacted the F.T.C. regarding ebay lowering a sellers visiblilty in Best Match even though we all pay the same listing fees?  Even if the buyer has a choice of changing the sort order, it isn't fair to disadvantage a seller using ANY sort order if we all pay the same listing fees.  The F.T.C. should at least make an inquiry to ebay.  What do you think?

I had a customer from Canada purchase an item.  When she recieved it, she said it was not measured correctly and was misleading, she thought it was bigger then described.  It was a nine west handbag.  She said it was off one inch, she obviously measured differently then I did.

She told me that she wouldn't ship it back due to her shipping both ways would be the same amount as the item purchased.  Mind you the handbag was 14.99 and in the description I clearly listed it as a mini, her shipping was a measly 7.76.

She basically, in little words, told me I would receive negative feedback if I didn't resolve this issue (talk about extortion).  I refunded her the 14.99 and told her to keep the handbag and hoped I would receive positive feedback.  After all, I did go above and beyond what I could have done.

And after all that, I notice my DSR droped considerably.  I am sure it was her, because I am a small seller and it went down after I recieved my feedback from her.

I don't feel this is fair, I am only human so if I did make a mistake I fixed it.  Shouldn't that show for something?  So now my items as listed in the normal exposure instead of raised exposure, where I was before she purchased from me.  I blocked her as a buyer.

Thank you,

Gloria Flynn

Wow-----They paid think tank thinkers to come up with this LAME fix---which is not a fix at all.  How many man hours went into this project?

It only gets worse---I, too, think it is just a ploy to take the attention away from the BIG picture.

I always thought the wording of DSR's was confusing.

For example: How accurate was the item's description?

Anything other than accurate is inaccurate. There is no gray area here. An item is either accurate or inaccurate. How can an item be very accurate or neither accurate or inaccurate? I am confused and I would imagine buyers just clicking away confused too. Ebay on the other hand is CASHING in.

It's called deception and Ebay plays this game for it's investors. If you can't win with ethical practices. CHEAT!

That's Ebays motto!

I went from high visibility to standard to lower in best match within a week.  I got dinged by 3 points on my shipping stars. For what I don't know???  I ship all my packages within 24 hours.  Sellers have no control over a buyer who gets angry over the littlest thing. For example the PO may be slow in delivering a package yet sellers will get dinged on their stars for slow service from the PO. Buyers place too many exceptations on the sellers which ebay fosters.  If they bought merchadise off a regular online store, shipping service would be even slower or they would not have the item in stock. Everyday I am stressed out if my stars will get dinged.  Ebay is telling buyers that a 4 star rating is good  for a seller, yet as a seller you will get penalized for the 4 instead of the 5 stars. I love selling clothing but I am seriously looking at other online auctions who treat their sellers with fairness. What ebay is promoting right now is buyers who can scam the system with their chargebacks and what not. If sellers complain or report  a buyer ebay attitude is oh well-we will rule in favor of the buyer and send them a coupon and  give them a refund.

It is time to  do some serious firing with Ebay officials. Ebay is making to many good sellers leave due to their fees and treatment of them. a number of Powersellers have left. Soon ebay will have nothing but cheap imports on their website.

It's crazy. The DSR's would work well on some item specific opinion type questions but not a focused fact related question such as item description. Fact related questions are either Yes or No.

How delicious was the food?
Very Delicious
Delicious
Neither Delicious or Not Delicious
Disgusting
Made me Puke

How accurate was the item description

It was accurate.
It was not accurate

See the difference?

''Neither Inaccurate nor Accurate''

Only in the land of eBay does such a bizarre concept exist.  And they probably spent a fortune dreaming up this new rating scale.  eBay certainly has a lot of ''stars'' on their payroll.

eBay execs, why are you trying to drive away buyers?  I used to enjoy shopping on eBay but between the broken search, having to fight Best Match in order to find what I want, and the extra fb junk, it's no longer fun to shop here.  And now youre considering making me click through a bunch of dropdown boxes?  I've already started to do alot of my shopping elsewhere because of continuous stupid decisions by eBay mgmt.  Apparently eBay doesnt want me shopping at all.

I've got a $100 paypal reward certificate waiting to be claimed on my paypal branded credit card.  I havent used it yet because shopping on eBay is now a chore, rather than fun like it used to be.

Okay, now I get it "neither inaccurate or accurate" is NEUTRAL. And now neutral's are negatives. So guess what? The bar has been raised yet again!
