eBay Holds Invitation-Only Limited Free-Listing Sale

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay is apparently holding an invitation-only listing promotion as part of a test. Usually the company announces such promotions on its announcement board, but a page on the eBay website shows a promotion sent only to certain users.

The "List 5 on us" promotion runs June 23-30 and is good for the first five listings during promotion period. Messaging on the page declares, "We're rewarding great buyers who are also great sellers."

There's no limitation with regards to starting price, which may motivate eligible users to list higher-priced items.

This promotion is available only to invited eBay sellers. According to the promotion description page, those who are part of the test will have received an email and a Message Center message. Eligible users will see a credit on their account by mid-August 2008.

The AuctionBytes reader who sent me the link is cynical about eBay's motivation in running the promotion. "The discount as stated is not an immediate reduction, but rather a credit which will be applied after the end of the second quarter," he writes. "Bottom line is that eBay appears to need a listing sale to increase listing numbers and revenue numbers to close out the Q2 reports. The discounts will artificially inflate Q2 revenue numbers and allow eBay to take the revenue reduction in the Q3 revenue numbers when they issue credits in August."

GAAP accounting rules would NOT allow eBay to charge for listings this quarter and then give refunds next quarter to manipulate quarterly financial numbers.

Since they are very aware upfront what the economic impacts will be, they will be required to put the reserves for this charge on their books this quarter.  There is no way for them to avoid it legally.  The net affect on this quarter will be revenue and reserves that zero out against one another.  Actually having the affect of making their profit margin look SMALLER this quarter, not any better.

However, it will obviously give them some level of boost in listing numbers for the quarter just like the 2-3 MILLION listings Buy.com is putting on eBay core for ''FREE'' each month.

My 2 Cents....

Is this working the numbers? Is this financial manipulation? Who knows?

What I do know is that we have a legal system that sues the pants off of innocent small businesses such as the dry cleaner who lost that guys pants, but we can't seem to get Ebay in court for obvious major and documented violations. Somebody is sleeping with Ebay.

Leave it to ebay to do the smokescreening. I guess that's the same reason they charged millions of users for their "Skype" program, when they never ordered just to get some earnigns for Q2. It i so disgusting, what they are trying to pull. Boycotters should have a fair playing field and this is TOTALLY not fair!

Divide and conquer ... couldn't they come up with a more acceptable way of rewarding their favourite pet sellers? Or is this another invitation going out to buyers to try and encourage new blood to come to the slaughter?

Yet another attempt to boost listing numbers, if they listened to what their users were saying on their own forums, they would know why so many are leaving for places like ebid.net and tazbar.com. Sorry eBay but youve manipulated things for too long, the place is now seriously broken.

Does anyone remember Prodigy?  Perhaps eBay management should look at its storied  history, and how it was king of the hill, only to die a slow painful death.  Let's see- VHS, Netscape, now Prodigy.  What other companies parallel the eBay of today????

It's naive for anyone to believe that ebay gives a rat's patootie about what's legal and what isn't.

Ebay has a long, well documented, and disgraceful history of thumbing their noses at laws at such mundane things as laws and patents.

Arrogant corporations like ebay operate under the assumption that they can do whatever they want as long as they don't get caught and as long as no government agency stops them.

It's just that simple.

I can't believe all you griping folks...EBAY finally does something meaningful to let sellers know they are appreciated and are met with nothing but cynical remarks!  EBAY knows their fee increases and ridiculous policies have alienated sellers and this is a big step in the right direction.  EBAY has greedily taken so much out of my pocket with "marketplace rebalancing" and "fee decreases", and now they finally want to put something back in the till!  We applaud you, EBAY!  Why, this promotion is going to save me personally....hang on....wait that can't be right....let me check again.....uh, seventy five cents?  Hey all you cynics, is there room for one more?

So you are saying that a 7 day listing sale that only allows SELECTED INVITED sellers to place a measly 5 listings which will be credited NEXT MONTH is a demonstration of how much eBay appreciates sellers?

Why not invite all sellers?
Why limit the number of eligible listings to only 5?
Why charge the full fee this month, and offer the discount as a credit next month?

This is not a buyer appreciation deal, this is a farce!!

Seems to me eBay is cooking the books AGAIN!!!!

RicRoe, could not agree more...my post was sarcasm directed at the pittance ebay offered a select group of sellers (myself included).  They need to do it right or not it all.  I will save 75 cents on this.  that was not worth the time it took to read their email  on it.  They should have offered it to everyone, and more than just 5 listings to their high volume sellers.  We list 20-30 items a day.  While anything free is appreciated, a 75 cent credit on what is over $1000 we pay every month isn't even a blip on my radar

Oh Gosh, be still my beating heart. I just finished blogging a thank you to eBay and I am rewarded by such munificence.

My feedback, unsullied and pure is worth more than $5 eBay bucks, more than 5 free listings, or ten dollars off shipping on something I don't want or need.

I might buy one item in August just to keep my user ID active but that is as far as I will go.

"Why not invite all sellers?"

I think you all are underestimating the "noise" that has been coming from sellers since January of this year - AND the silent leaving of many many sellers in its wake.  They aren't inviting ALL of us because they can't AFFORD to!  Simple as that.  All I can say is keep up the noise, keep up the posting...even the financials and the wall street gang are FINALLY catching on!  Read a Motely Fool article just yesterday "Throw Out This Stock" and they were speaking about EBAY!  Speak up, speak out, use word of mouth and posting wherever you can - or be lost forever!

What a insult offering a measley coupon to sellers/buyers who have used eBay for many years and suffered through the last 6 mo of changes.  Very tacky/cheap move of eBay.  This is just like a  abusive relationship---many take "it" until we don't---and then we move on and re-capture our self esteem knowing eBay is not our Source.  eBay is not the only game in town but it is the one that changes the rules thinking they can win.  We will see.
