By: Ina Steiner

Some members report getting an email yesterday from eBay with a new phone number for customer support. It appears it may have been sent out to buyers only.

The email read: "Only invited members like you will be able to call our new number. To access this faster service, you'll need to set up a PIN in My eBay. Also be sure to add your current phone number to your profile. Then, you'll be all set to go on June 16."

Someone wrote on a discussion board thread: When I click on the "contact us" link I get the following message: As one of our most valued eBay members, we are offering you direct access to eBay customer service representatives who are here to assist you. Please select from the options below. Phone Reach us by phone or Skype from 6am - 9pm, Pacific Time, 7 days a week. This phone number is just for members like you who have been invited to participate, so please have your account information ready for verification purposes when you call.

Hey, I got one of those, too.  I used to be a very heavy buyer, on the order of $20K-$30K per year, but haven't been able to find much to spend my money on lately.  I also sell, but on a fairly small scale, so it's probably true that this is targeted for buyers more than sellers.

This company is dead in the water when another auction site truly takes hold.

Sellers at eBay have the right to feel like battered housewives.  The new CEO and his leadership team seems to have total disdain and no respect whatsoever for their customers (the sellers). YES EBAY, YOUR SELLERS ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS.

Donahue should write a how-to book on how to run customers away.

Has there ever been another company in the history of mankind who so flagrantly thumbs their noses at their customers.   The arrogance is unprecedented.

The people eBay needs to give a customer support number to is the sellers.  I as a seller I am tired of getting no answers from live help or having to find the right form to report anothe ''bug'' on eBay.

Buyers should contact the seller directly.  If I have a problem with a purchase I made at my local mall, I talk to the store, not the onwers of the mall.

Is anyone suprised?  I'm not...its just another stupid move in a virtual dance full of stupid moves ebay has made since January of this year.  As for finding a replacement for ebay - that's entirely up to us ebay users (present and former).  Get out there and support other venues AND don't forget to tell your present buyers where they may find you!  The bottom line is sales and revenue is all that counts to a callous bunch of suits like ebay management.  Take that away from them and it really hurts!  Do it!

LOL! The keystone cops @ebay hit bottom and keep digging! If ebay was really serious about climbing out of their hole they would put a 1-800 contact number on their home page. This stuff is just laugh out loud amateurish.

@ CONCHO.........

Perfect, you hit the nail on the head!!!

Why don't we (the sellers) Just let eBay do all the selling of our stuff and we can drop ship for them...

I would just love to know what the corporate folks are thinking and then they need there meds adjusted!!! LOL

So, does this mean that only CERTAIN buyers get this phone #?

I continue to be amazed at the wording of these announcements. ''We don't give our phone number to just ANYBODY''. That's laughable. As if having access to this phone number automatically puts you in some elite group...!!

Or, the more you buy, then we'll THINK about giving you a phone number. eBay is now in the business of SELLING customer service, basically. And I use that term ''customer service'' VERY loosely.

Okay, fine. When you actually try to CALL this number you will realize you're nuttin' but po' white trash after all, cuz they'll put you on hold for 45 minutes and won't do a dang thing to help you out anyway.

Nobody in ''customer service'' has a clue what they are talking about anyway, even the Power Seller reps.

More smoke and mirrors, more bait and switch.

I think MOST people are beginning to feel VERY offended by the way eBay words its announcements...even the lucky ones who are the ELITE phone-number recipients.

Wow. You guys who get to have this elusive phone number: I'm SOOOOOOO jealous of you.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

NOT!!! GAWD I am so glad to be done with eBay. Truly, it's embarrassing to admit I ever had anything to do with them in the first place. When people find out I used to sell on eBay, they look at me funny. I'm keeping it a secret from now on.

WHO in their right mind would want to do business with a company who picks and chooses which people to offer customer service to?

Sounds like good ole classic prejudice and DISCRIMINATION to me.

Is that even LEGAL?

Maybe, but it's also VERY VERY stupid.

Ebay keeps tightening up on all area's of its business. Are they pleasing their customers though in doing this. Some say yes, some say no.

I say the more restrictions you put on your sight, the more you squeeze your customers, the bigger the chance another site will come along to challenge you.

In the past eBay has used Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act as a shield to litigation.  Since eBay relies on Section 230 for their "just a venue" status, couldn't providing this direct contact number to buyers disqualify them?  Isn't this a way of involving themselves in transactions?  Or am I missing something?

I have not seen anything so sad in a very loong time. Ebay used to be such a great site to buy AND sell. I have met some wonderful people along the way. Of course they have had their share of " undesireables " like there would be any where else. It is sooo sad to watch what these people are doing to Ebay. They are totally destroying it. This is not what Ebay was origionally about. Who on earth was responsible for putting these clowns in charge anyway??? They have put buyers and sellers against each other. If sellers leave, what will the buyers buy? Sellers are responsible for the majority of Ebay's profits!! Am I missing something here? I have noticed that my last few auctions have been terrible. Not even many " lookers " at my items. Just my opinion but, It wouldn't surprise me if Ebay had something to do with this also. I am thinking very strongly about selling on Craig's list. No more hassels or being " graded "or " punished like when we were in grade school. How silly. plus, Craig's list is FREE, FREE, FREE!!! Ebay sucks every penny out of you so that the only people that make anything are high end sellers and people that have Ebay stores. Maybe they can afford to offer free shipping. I can't! By the way, I did not receive a letter reguarding the " secret " phone number either. It's probably about as good as a toothache anyway.

I didn't receive this email. I am a buyer, but obviously not spending enough money.

Ebay needs to apply the ploicies fairly to every user.

It's always amazed me that you have to pay ebaY thousands of dollars in monthly fees to get the kind of phone support you expect from the neighborhood hardware store when calling about a ten cent washer.
