Complaints of PayPal Subscription Bug

By: Ina Steiner

A web analytics service called StatCounter complained on its blog of technical issues to do with PayPal subscription billing, and says PayPal has given it no assistance. "These problems with Paypal have already cost us thousands of dollars," as well as time and resources, StatCounter complains.

Owen Thomas blogged about the problem on Valleywag in a post called, "PayPal closes the border."

"Subscriptions are a small part of PayPal's business, though vital to the complaint-prone blogging class. Regardless, it's a trivial bug that should have taken minutes, not weeks, to fix," Thomas opined.

Update 5/30/08: Jenni at StatCounter says problems are resolved, see her comment below.

"complaint-prone blogging class"

What's that meant to imply?

It's true that Paypal has largely ignored StatCounter. Two posts to the Paypal Developer forum, made by StatCounterJen had gotten no response at all, at last check.

Once again, Paypal shows how little it is concerned with customer service. Their arrogance is disgusting.

OMG! Has anybody checked all the complaints against Paypal and Ebay with the  Better Business Bureau?

How can a company be so arrogant to want to hold the world accountable but they have no incentive to perform themselves.

What would it take for the seller unrest to subside? Ebay has to wake up and realize they have a public relations disaster that brews and stews. They need to engage sellers once again and fix their company.

Funny, I use GoStats and they were able to indentify and work around the bug without any hassle.

Hi Ina,

Many thanks for drawing attention to the problems we have been highlighting.

I am delighted to be able to let you know that Paypal have now acknowledged the double billing issue.

mts_updates&message.id=205

For
any merchants our there whose customers have been affected by double billing, Paypal have confirmed that you can EITHER refund one of the two transactions by yourself OR contact their merchant support.

As far as we can see, ALL the issues we previously reported are now RESOLVED.

Our blog details the sequence of communications that followed our writing a post about the problems.

The big PayPal problem right now is active subscriptions cannot be cancelled. No Cancel button showing for either the Buyer or Seller and just an ellipsis (...) shown where the word Active usually is.  And the subscriptions ARE live, too, they go on to charge the irate customer. PayPal has taken two tickets from us regarding this, acknowledging both times it is a known issue (a bug) and even they can't cancel the subscriptions.  There is nothing anyone can do.

People: AVOID PAYPAL at all costs.

Hi SL,

We had the cancel subscription problem too but Paypal have said this issue has been resolved:

Post
in the above thread if the issue persists for you. We CAN now cancel subscriptions again. This problem should never have taken so long to fix, but it does appear to have been resolved for us now.

Paypal STINKS! They suspended my account and I have no idea why. I paid for all my purchases and have never had a complaint. They are holding $293.00 of my money for 6 months! Is that legal?  They do not have any CUSTOMER SERVICE and NEVER answer any questions.  Should the FEDS take a look at Paypal practices?  How can they hold my money for items I have shipped and hide behind the never ending pages of Paypal Policy.  There is never a CLEAR answer from them. I can't wait to hear when they need to lay off employees just like ebay has announced. There has GOT to be other companies out there that will knock paypal off the block.
