AuctionBytes Bigger and Faster than Ever!

By: Ina Steiner

Dear Readers,
To keep up with our growing traffic, AuctionBytes has moved to a faster, larger server. The move took place over the weekend and everything went smoothly, however it may take some time for all ISPs to resolve to our new IP.

This means the majority of you are already seeing our site on the new server, (If you're seeing this post, then you're on the new server) but some people will still be viewing our site on the old server for a few more days. If that's the case, you may not see up-to-date comments on the AuctionBytes blog until your ISP has caught up.

We may have lost some forum comments and blog comments in the moving process. Feel free to repost your comments if they are missing. In addition, we may have lost some email beginning Saturday evening and continuing into Sunday. Our apologies for the inconvenience. Please resend your email if you don't hear back from David or me by Monday afternoon.

The AuctionBytes website should be even peppier than before, and we're excited to be upgrading our site so we can keep delivering news and information to you and provide you with useful charts of services on our website to help you grow your business.

Thanks,
Ina

I wonder if the eBay ''conspiracy believers'' will think that you ''lost'' some blog comments because you didn't agree with them. David and Ina, keep doin' what you're doin' -- you have a great and informational site.

Just a hunch, but I am sure with all the heavy fisted changes being shoved down every sellers throat, that Auctionbytes has increased subscribers by thousands off of word of mouth alone.

It's nice to see that you invested in your Auctionbytes company. This is an excellent source of information for not only Ebay but for alternatives to Ebay.

One thing that I did notice is sellers are tired. They are not tired of changes, they are not tired of management, they are just tired.

I personally still make money on Ebay, but I have more listings and less traffic. The numbers no longer make sense. My industry is booming, just not on Ebay any longer.

It's hard to strategize for your company, when there are tweaks after tweaks, then take backs, then test pages constantly.

I don't like the new eBay.

LOL----SO TRUE
Hope this server is big enough to handle the next huge batch of subscribers, especially if eBay makes free shipping standard practice.

Dinesh Lathi, VP of Seller Experience: The fact of the matter is that free shipping is the standard for eCommerce now. Sellers who want to meet buyer expectations need to aspire to that. It is our job, the people here on stage, to help you do that. So, there are definite things in the works at eBay that will help you accomplish that. Look for that soon.

Oh Goody

AC - I thought the site was faster too.

The transition went incredibly well but I really regret the loss of some blog comments. I appreciate everyone that comes here to share information and opinions, it's very rewarding to serve online sellers.

I should also thank our sponsors for advertising on AuctionBytes.

The information here is so valuable that I'd use a dial up modem and wait 5 minutes for the page to load. Faster is better, but your content is KING !!

Keep up the EXCELLENT work...I wouldn't know WHAT was going out without this incredible resource.

Ina - smacks of success.  Your service is a really vital one, especially to us ebay sellers caught up in a lot of misery.  Keep up the good work.

Yes, things will get worse as ebay tries to keep up its present revenue flow.  Their listings are starting to look like a rollercoaster ride.  They can't keep them up without a gimmick!  STILL they refuse to listen!  They're going to get exactly what they deserve.

Patricia....
You said it! It takes a Gimmick to drive Ebays listings.

I have nothing against promotions, but I honestly feel they are launched to change the perception of Ebays health.
Ebay made their model to thrive off of market dysfunction. The more dsyfunctional the market is, the more money Ebay makes. It's a crappy strategy and it will be hard for eBay to try to convince sellers to trust them again. This was once a great enterprise where sellers made lots of money and made Ebay alot of money. It is a totally lopsided venture now and that is why your seeing alot of other movement in competiting companies. There is a void and other companies will capitalize on it. We are all in limbo for the time being.

Ebay is powerful for one reason and that is it's BRAND. The brand is eroding and sellers sell with a bubble in their throat. What a great business atmosphere!

Ugggh!

Good stuff!  I'm glad to see you guys upgrading your service.  I know I look to AuctionBytes to keep me up to date on all the changes and news occurring in the eBay world and the ecommerce market in general.  I am trying to make my business work and never have the time to go trolling through dozens of blogs or forums to keep up with things.  I thank you wholeheartedly for providing such a valuable service!

I have been reading Auctionbytes for less then a year, found it through a link from another site.  It is so great to have all the new auction news just a click away! I tell every seller I know to check it out especially with all the turmoil ebay is putting us seller through lately. You can’t mention eBay to me without me saying Auctionbytes.

Thank you Ina for providing such timely information, you do a better job communicating what going on at eBay then eBay does!

But I must say the blog entries are my favorite, it is so refreshing to see everyone’s opinion expressed. I don’t feel like that’s possible on eBay’s forums. This site allows us to express our views freely, even on those few times when we might disagree with the Steiners, and we thank you for that.

Ina,

I think upgrading capacity is a good thing, however I do have to question the loss of content. It would seem that when a move such as this is done, backups would have been made so that in the event of content loss, it could have be migrated back into the site.

Hi Dave,

Hard to argue your point - we hate to lose any content on the site. The move affected fewer than half a dozen comments. There are backups, but the site is constantly getting traffic and posts, etc. so when we went to make the final database moves, there was a certain amount of downtime (and the time it took for DNS to propogate the new IP), and that's when things got dropped.

If time permits (we're still tweaking all the software this site runs to work with the upgraded server) I may dig into the backups and see if those comments can be restored, with the original time stamps.
