Reader Reports Problem with UPS Website Quotes

By: Ina Steiner

Longtime reader Ed reports a problem with the UPS website, reporting that the quotes he gets are underestimating actual charges. He said UPS told him he was getting quotes for the daily rates instead of rates for occasional UPS shippers and that it's a known issue. We haven't confirmed this, but keep it in mind if you use the UPS site to get quotes. Here's the fix he was told to use:

To avoid this I would suggest when you are calculating a rate and the website asks you to Select a UPS Account Number: leave it as No Account Selected. This will generate the right price. The other way of calculating the right price is to not login with your userid and password. Again, this will generate the right price.

If you ship $60 or more per week (in UPS rate fees), daily pickup is only $8 per week.. and imagine this.. you get about a 20% discount IMMEDIATELY from the standard rates.  If you ship less than $60 week, the $8 may go up a bit more.. but I would just suggest opening up an account (it's free to do that), and then call UPS and ask them for more details.

You will probably save yourself money in the short and long term, but even MORE important than that, you'll save TIME.  Which some people say, is more valuable than money. :-)

Even if you have a home office, they will pick up every day from your house (no surcharge if they pick up from residential).

One more huge benefit is that if you are a daily pickup account, you can use UPS WorldShip.. another fantastic time saving app.  (runs on Windows only)

Take care,

FYI, last year, UPS began offering daily shipping rates through eBay/Paypal.  This was announced at eBay Live.  You simply have to register your UPS account with Paypal to get these rates.
