eBay Glitch Leads to 3-Star DSR Maximum

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Users are reporting they can only leave a maximum of 3 stars for Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs) out of a possible 5 stars. Board talk started late Friday night. Link and Link.

Sellers are upset because eBay penalizes sellers with low DSRs and disadvantages their listings in search. And now, even a 4-star rating (which doesn't sound like a bad rating) leads to a Red Warning from eBay being inserted in listings that appear to some percentage of shoppers who are part of eBay's View Item testing.

Good luck getting accidental 3s removed, especially if you don't have a TSAM (Top Seller Account Manager). If there's a way for all sellers to fix any undeserved marks on their records, I hope eBay will pop in here with instructions.

Update: 2/24/08: eBay posted an announcement of the problem yesterday at 6:43 on the Systems Announcement Board. It added an update stating that the problem had been resolved at 8:13. But no specifics about how many people were affected and what it will do about undeserved low DSRs...

Update 2/25/08: eBay will change all DSRs left during the time there was a problem to a 5, perfect score. See full story here.

No surprise here. Last month, they charged me for the supposedly free gallery pictures that were part of the holiday promotion. And Paypal did not post interest to my MM account UNTIL i ASKED THEM ABOUT IT. The company is a mess. It relies on computers to rate Sellers - I don't think anyone ever bothers to review the comments for content once they are brought to a reps attention. And all you get from them is form paragraphs, slow "responses" and uninformed rudeness. I don't know why the press is fawning all over this company and protecting it, instead of investigating it. The "no negative feedback for Buyers" should have been a big hint - as to who is "actually" running the company and how desperate they are for shopping eyeballs. Meg Whitman ruined eBay. Bring back Pierre.

Above
is the thread on the Auction Listings board, complete with my screenshots using Firefox and Safari. It's dismal. I'd love to leave my sellers 5 stars. I can't leave them *any* stars. Clicking does nothing.

How many other glitches have there been? They haven't been exactly forthcoming recently.

AND they are willing to shut sellers down over these? Or red letter a seller over them?

Somehow . . . I am not at all surprised.

eBay has been "glitching" with seller store settings all during the boycott.  Why shouldn't they mess around with DSR ratings?  They're probably screwing up everyone's feedback too.

eBay sucks.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Another stupid software error, combined with stupid buyers who upon seeing they can't leave anyone above a 3, will just leave a 3, thinking "that's fine".

Meanwhile, try getting your "dinged" ratings fixed. This company is run by such assholes.

See this image folks:

Talk about STUPID coding. Then they blame it on Firefox and Safari, when the image plainly shows that IE suffers from this too. Who is the IDIOT that codes this stuff? Why don't they roll it back the INSTANT they know there is a PROBLEM?

Geez, this makes me MAD!

If Ebay popped in here with instructions, you can bet it would be some idiotic canned response and a suggestion that all sellers offer free shipping to offset the 3's the seller's received.

I second that.  Ebay sucks.

That red warning you mentioned has been dubbed the "Scarlet Letter". Read about it here http://www.flickr.com/groups/greedbay/ or on Delphi.com under Boycott Ebay. There is are many sites on MySpace such as www.myspace.com/boycottebay. There are also numerous videos on YouTube.

EBay is playing very, very dirty, and the public needs to know this. I do not think there is a level to which they won't stoop - not to be trusted ever again.

Could this possibly be an Anti-Trust issue? There must some government watchdog scrutinizing eBay.

I think the fine folks at eBay are doing a great job. I hope they run off every single buyer and seller from the site. More buyers for me elswhere.

I am tired of ebay complicating ebay sites for buyers summary and hearing from one of my favorite seller they feel the same.  They were wondering why I left less stars and emailed and explained I left 5 stars pf 100%.  My ebay summary is so screwed up I have to float between two sites, old and new beta.  They can keep insist they fized my summary page.. NOT.. I is so complicated that I find myself not bidding because I am sick of the hassle finding favorites, bidding, watching, and leaving feedback.  What a crock about being easier and better...NOT...It the worst I've used and if anyone starts a lawsuit against ebay I will put my name on the list and be a witness to the HORRIBLE what every they call themselves now.  When I called for help, they had me in tears because of their rules, their way, and must be my computer.  Well, they better make it user friendly for me and millions of others because people will quit using ebay.  Fact is fact, the new version of ebay is a ZERO.  If I have such a hard time getting around my ebay account I will just go away.  Then the sellers will quit selling..and eventually ebay will go away.  I feel ebay has gotten the idea that they are above reproach and that the public (buyer and seller) will just have to deal with it. If feedback is a tool for buyers to know how "all around good" a seller is, but on the other hand it's just information, then WHY does feedback count against or for a seller in percent.  Like they say, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it a real good guess its a duck.  Come on ebay decide what is best for the buyer and seller and do your job as the middleman to help BOTH to come together for the completion of the sale.  DO YOUR JOB RIGHT EBAY...

There is only one real answer to all this and that is to use ebid.net. For a small one of fee that can be as little as $1.99 you can list for free and have zero final value fee's. I think the online auction community now has an alternative and it deserves a serious look.

Since ebay has now put so much power in the hands of the buyers to ruin a seller, it has now placed the power to ruin ebay in the hands of the sellers.

If this boycott leads nowhere, sellers CAN play very dirty by doing exactly what sellers fear.  Sad, but true.

Chase away ebay's REAL customers (sellers), and ebay suffers for it.  That may be the only real way to teach ebay the lesson the need to learn, hit them in their deep pockets.

I give my eBay cistomers 5 star service 24/7.
eBay is providing 2 star support at 6 star prices.
I do NOT want to here "We apologize for any inconvience this may have caused"  Failure to correct problems and repair damage done to seller's reputations due to a system bug is asking for a Class Action lawsuit.

It's very slow and doesn't even respond in the manner requested.  Shame about that.  I had such great hope for it.

petelan,

I doubt there are any class actions in the works... none that I've heard of at least.

Though it would be nice to see ebay hit from all sides: Law suits, boycotts (extended), and buyers and sellers exploiting their horrible policy changes to chase off sellers, would all make ebay take note.

Ebay doesn't listen to anything that doesn't have a dollar sign in front of it.
