eBay's John Donahoe on 'Naughty CEO' List

By: Ina Steiner

eBay CEO John Donahoe made GlassDoor.com's list of the top ten "naughty" CEOs. GlassDoor.com launched in 2008 and lets employees review their employers anonymously and share salary information. The list of top ten nice and naughty CEOs was posted on December 18th on the GlassDoor blog and is based on employee approval ratings. There were 202 anonymous ratings for eBay worldwide as of December 27th.

The company stated, "The naughty list is synonymous with our "Watch List" - a term we coined for the CEOs with the highest disapproval ratings (with at least 50 reviews) and are at risk of being ousted."

David blogged here in October about who Donahoe's successor might be if he were to leave eBay.

Ina, You should post this to eBay. I would but I have been slapped for a week and cannot post it. Maybe if you post it it will stay up. Anything us sellers post that is not pro eBay, is being removed at an alarming rate by eBay

Because anyone can registered at glassdoor and post anonymous reviews on companies and CEOs, I'd be curious to know if all the reviews on Donahoe are actual ebay employees or if a certain percentage of them are disgruntled ebay users posing as an employee/ex employee just to give Donahoe a negative review.

@ ROB....Sorry to burst your bubble but you have to be an employee to post a comment about your employer. You cannot register and post a comment on another company if you are not a current or past employee of that company. You can however view the statistics/comments of other companies posted by their employees

How do they control or enforce that?

Glassceiling doesnt enforce anything. According to their employee FAQ, the whole system is based on honesty, and they do not verify whether or not the person leaving the review does or ever did actually work for the company they are reviewing. The system can be easily gamed by ANYONE based on what I've read.

That was my whole point! It is possible for ANYONE to claim they work for Ebay and leave a review, and I suspect alot of the reviews that have been left are from disgruntled ebay sellers.

You do NOT have to be an employee of a company to post on glassdoor.com.  I know because I posted there about my own company and I was never once asked to verify or prove that I really did work for the company.  Actually, I made up a half-hearted post about my own company because it was the only way I could see the full posts of ebay employees about their company.  I'd be the first one to slam John Donahoe.  I believe he and his crew are killing Ebay for all time...but, I have to agree that the ebay posts on glassdoor are dubious at best and not to fully be believed.

Ina - this is not a really good article because it has no real validity.  Sorry.

@ ROB if you are so sure then register and post a comment on eBay or any other company. Then come back and post your comment. We contacted glassdoor and told them what is happening here regarding certain posters questioning the integrity of their site.

If anyone can post whether they work(ed) there or not, they shouldn't have this site up. Of course, disgruntled eBay sellers are going to post on it.

Claypipe - I often take Ina's articles into Ebay's Seller Central Current Events thread....Until the thread got moved to the Soapbox a few weeks ago....And now this morning it is gone for good.

What's the matter Ebay?  Afraid of the poor reviews you have been getting in the media lately?

Since this article (dated Dec 18th), Donahoe was lucky to get two 5.0 grades for Christmas which moved him up to 23%.  Still Pathetic.

And then Ebay has the audacity to grade the sellers on a 1 to 5 scale and at 4.1 the sellers are suspended.  Why not grade yourself on that tough scale John and fire yourself!

Here is the page where GlassDoor explains its methodology. And of course you should take the list with a grain of salt.

@claypipe,

One of the many reasons I closed my two ebay stores earlier this year after having been a  successful power seller under two ebay ID for 5 years was because ebay offered NO seller protection and support against BOGUS,UNJUSTIFIED & UNDESERVING retaliatory negs left by nonpaying bidders and other problematic buyers.

I'm certainly not going to go leave ebay a bad company review posing as an actual employee. That's immoral in my opinion.

As an EX ebay seller, I regularly utilize sites like auctionbytes, seekingalpha, delphiaforums, powersellersunite, blogutopia, tamebay and any and all media sources posting articles about ebay tp express my own TRUTHFUL, NEGATIVE reviews of Ebay's & PayPal's management team.

I can see that ebay's soapbox thread about all the ebay updated news was pulled not only from seller central, but it ws finally deleted from the soapbox as well. It was a great link for stockholders to read about the facts, as well as a thread that must have upset SOME stockholders because it would enlighten them as to what they were not paying attention to when purchasing shares!

It must be a big worry, and something most stockholders of ebay are ashamed of, since they always thought they could hide their treatment of sellers from the world by burying the reality posts somewhere where they could not be found.

Some of us part-time sellers are pretty resourceful... and we will FIND a way to enlighten the public about this company even without suggesting that they visit certain threads n the discussion boards.

Ebay employees need not worry any more, we will be sure to spread our wealth of commentary and informational news on the investors pages EVERYWHERE!

Since some of us were knocked off the discussion boards we will have more time to be creative with our opinions of ebay, somewhere else.

I posted a test rating on GlassDoor.com for eBay about two weeks ago.  I posed as an eBay employee, even though I have never worked there.

My rating was there for everyone to see a few days later when I went back and checked on it.

Anyone, especially those that constantly bash eBay here and on other blogs, can register and pretend to be an eBay employee.

If you read the ratings it is quite obvious that many are from eBay users NOT eBay employees.

The system as far as eBay ratings goes has ZERO integrity as it has been skewed by far too many fake ratings.

It is funny how some here that hate eBay put so much faith in GlassDoor.com anonymous ratings while at the same time vehemently denouncing the validity of eBay anonymous DSR ratings where an ACTUAL transaction is required to leave a rating.

Interesting isn't it?

Even if there were legitimate employee reviews  of CEO's on glassdoor.com why in the world should we rely on the opinions of employees to evaluate whether or not a CEO is good or not?

I can't imagine a more insane standard by which to measure the quality of a CEO.

A CEO is about PROFITS and GROWING THE BUSINESS. If you can do that with a bunch of unhappy employees you are still a great CEO.

Example -

Being loved by employees is easy...simply give them all the profits and expect little of them. Set easily achieved corporate goals.

Throw in 10 hour work weeks 2 years family leave for new babies and 10 weeks vacation for every employee etc.

A one year anniversary new car of your choice, free child care and free meals for everyone every day...

The employees will love the CEO...until the whole business goes under.

The whole concept is insane.

eBay is fading away. Even if the CEO were well liked, he/she would have to take responsibility.

It is fairly easy to spot the posers in the comments at glassdoor. The real employees speak to corporate culture while the posers whine as normal.

That said, eBay is in decline and a big percentage of the problem is obviously foolish management. Stockholders will eventually get their heads around the situation and insist on a shakeup.

The performance trends for the stock and market share against Amazon are pretty astounding. Hard to ignore.
