Amazon's New Advertising Platform: eBay

By: David Steiner

Sponsored Link

It's possible that one of the reasons Amazon is gaining on eBay in unique visitors and other metrics is because Amazon is now advertising on eBay. In doing a search for iPods on eBay this morning, we noticed a big leaderboard banner for Amazon above the search results (that actually made us question which site we were on for a second).

Now we'll wait until Friday to see if we won Ten Grand on Amazon. That should buy a few iPods. Wish us luck!

The banner links to a page on Amazon that promotes a $10,000 Black Friday giveaway.

Did we enter the promotion?
Big thumbs up there!
Did we stop looking for iPods on eBay? Absolutely!

It's actually heartwarming to see that eBay is so full of the holiday spirit of giving that they've decided to share ad placement with a competitor. We're not entirely sure that merchants, who are paying for listings, will feel the same way...but HAPPY HOLIDAYS anyway!

Some Sellers have wised up to the fact that selling items on eBay is way too expensive.   Sellers have repeatedly told eBay that competing ads are not a good thing.  And, eBay has responded by additionally placing ads on Sellers listings.  The listings that eBay charges outrageous fees for.

If this was not so serious for fee paying eBay sellers it would be laughable.

eBay is selling out their traffic & sellers for literally PENNIES.

It's been going on for a long time & will only get worse.

As far as Amazon, eBay has to keep on their good side. They don't want BillMeLater tossed off Amazon's site...

A lesson that might make some sense for eBay corporate...

Imagine you are in charge of Pepsi advertising and you pay XYZ Marketing Company to have a commercial made for TV. Once your commercial runs on TV imagine (much to your surprise) that you see a  banner sponsorship for Coke prominently placed on the top of the screen. XYZ Marketing Company decided they could make more money that way.

QUESTION: Would Pepsi be upset by that?

NEXT QUESTION: Hey eBay, who is funding your advertising budget? Are you watching out for them?

The only thing ebay cares about is the bottom line and will sell there sole to attain it.

Three weeks ago I bought a new DVD on ebay.

Without identifying either the seller or the DVD title, the item arrived promptly inside a *new* Amazon box with an Amazon invoice.

I laughed all day about this. If I were Amazon management, I'd be laughing all the way to the bank.

Ebay is simply clueless about their own marketplace.

Unbelievable.  eBay can't possibly be hurting for revenues that bad that they'll actually run ads that drive users off their site and onto a competitor's site?  This is dumb on so many levels.

Typical Ebay. Personally.....the way I see it, Ebay is the way alot of people make income for their families. I suggest they break all the Ebay listing policies, rules, etc. they can to make sales and make money. To hell with Ebay's stupid policies....if you get suspended, just make a new ID and keep doing it. Use them....don't let them use you.

I stopped selling on eBay about 6 months ago. I like Amazon. I am glad to see eBay sending buyers to my items on Amazon.

Excerpts from techcrunch's (11/26/08) article:

As Holiday Sales Look Grim, Amazon and eBay Are On A Collision Course

...The company [ebay] has been emphasizing fixed-price listings for a while now. But earlier this week it took another step towards wooing the types of merchants that you are still more likely to find on Amazon. On Monday, eBay quietly announced a new program in beta that will allow large merchants to list thousands of fixed-price items at once on the site.

...Its $945 million Bill Me Later acquisition is now looking suspect. And its overall ability to attract consumers has stagnated. According to comScore, eBay had 70.7 million unique U.S. visitors in October, down 11 percent from the year before. In contrast, Amazon had 60.1 million unique U.S. visitors in October, up 6 percent (see chart above).

...The reality is that any merchant selling online will list their items for sale in multiple locations—on Amazon, eBay, their own Websites, etc. (Multi-channel e-commerce management service Mercent, for example, is already supporting eBay’s API for its online retail customers).

Now, with this new API we might see some interesting mixing and matching. An online retailer, for instance, can now list her items on eBay and use Amazon’s fulfillment API to ship the orders from an Amazon warehouse.

Don’t underestimate the importance of these APIs in the battle to dominate e-commerce. Whoever controls the flow of transaction information, will control the flow of goods online.

SELLER, EBAY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.

They have no loyalty to you. Based on my experience trying to shop for my favorite collectibles on eBay vs elsewhere, anyone who wants to sell those, at least, is trapped on eBay.

So eBay management is ''monetizing'' you and the shoppers you bring to it by selling ads to other eBay retailers. They couldn't care less about the effect of the ads on eBay sellers. They know lots and lots of you are stuck there.

That's 21st Century capitalism, baby! Stop being surprised by it.

I'd like to say that Ebay was pulling an April Fool's Day prank but ... it's November!

I dumped my eBay store and won't be going back but I do hope they keep up their stunts because it's time to bring on some competition -- the everyday, average person who just wants to make a couple of bucks!

Go Average Person -- sell and buy from someplace other than eBay!

You can do it! The eBay "ship" is taking on water.

@ Leonard

21st century capitalism is nothing more Bush administration's refusal to enforce any laws or regulations against corporations including ebay and Bush's continuing executive orders(more vbery quietly issued two weeks ago) to further deregulate these rogue businesses.

The result? Trillions in taxpayer funded bailouts while those responsible escape with their millions and billions without consequences.

If you don't speak out, you're part of the problem not part of the solution.

21st century capitalism as you put it isn't legal. We can only hope that the Obama administration will begin enforcing laws and regulations and

Obviously selling out Ebay sellers in exchange for PPC ad revenue has come back to bite corporate Ebay. What a wonderful advertising coup Amazon scored with that ad. Nice job Amazon may your holiday season be filled with big piles of money for you and your sellers.

Today you can see ads for Toys R Us and every other larger retailer directly competing against Ebay sellers on the site itself. That illustrates very clearly how disloyal and disrespectful Ebay is to it's own sellers. I wouldn't buy on Ebay today on a bet let alone waste my time attempting to sell on that mess of a site.

The PPC program is another prime illustration why ebay is crumbling.

It is yet another short sighted, short term attempted fix that does nothing to solve any of ebay's long term problems.

Spend an hour clicking on Toys R Us links and then email them telling them why you won't buy from them on ebay, on their website, and in their B&M stores.

Seller Empire, Strike Back!

Death to ebay corp.

Quite possibly the silliest business thing I've seen in quite some time. Not too mention the ads you see at the bottom of the page on a number of listings...

Sellers can't link to third-party sites...so this is somewhat of a silly oxymoron.
