Google Displays eBay Product Listings in AdWords Ads

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

If you conduct searches on Google, you've likely seen the sponsored links that often appear above the search results. Google has added a Product Plus Box in the ads that lets searchers expand the advertisements to show three product listings. You'll recall that we wrote a thought piece about the potential of Google Base and Google AdWords that has not yet been realized. This isn't exactly what we were hypothesizing, but it's getting closer!

Google has other types of "Plus Boxes" - including ones for stock information and for maps. For example, when you see a public company in Google search results, you can click on the Plus Box to bring up more information about the stock. Webmaster World and Search Engine Land have been speculating about Plus Boxes for product listings for some time. Search Engine Land spotted them live a few weeks ago and posted screenshots that show exactly how they work.

Despite the misinformation posted by an eBay employee in a recent thread stating that Google has refused to work with eBay and instead scrapes the site, and that exposure for eBay product listings on Google is somehow a bad thing, eBay does work closely with Google. eBay is, in fact, participating in Google's tests of the Plus Box for product listings, according to Matt Ackley, Vice President of International Marketing and Advertising at eBay. You can read more about how eBay works with Google and optimizes its listings for search-engine exposure in tomorrow's AuctionBytes-Update newsletter.

In the meantime, keep your eyes open for Product Plus Boxes that show product listings from eBay and online retailers, and send us a screenshot if you can.

Oh go on, name names.

It was Griff, the professional eBay gladhander who gave out the erroneous information in what appears to be a fit of google pique.

Apparently he's further out of the loop than he realizes now that all his old buds are gone.

Dimes, you can almost see him squirm sometimes.  Wondering how much of the company Kool-aid he had to drink before posting that nonsense?
Next best Griff advice will probably be:  Check out the eBay promoted dropsippers and ship before getting paid to bump up those DSRs.
Isn't that the new eBay policy?

Now you see the importance of building your own website or online store, cut out the bull from CZAR DONAHOE and put those ebay fee's to work on Google.
If you start building your sales off ebay now, you will be the better for it. I started on October 01, 2008 and my off ebay sales are increasing steadily each week, while my ebay sales are almost practically zero. Google has it figured out and appears to ramping up slowly, soon the ''OTHER ALTERNATIVE WILL BE A REALITY''...

eBay.co.uk does little to ensure fair exposure for eBay sellers on Google search but works so hard to ensure maximum exposure of Google promoted websites through eBay.co.uk Sponsored Links to such an extent now that they are even putting Sponsored Links in our listings in an attempt to drive sales offsite!!
We are all still waiting for the spineless management team in Richmond to provide justification for this to the community.

We've found that none of our eBay Fixed Price 30 (FP30) listings with either free or calculated shipping successfully publish to Google Base. This is not a problem with FP30 listings with a specified shipping cost above $0.01. Also, we do not have this problem when we publish our Bonanzle listings (some contain calculated shipping) to Google base. eBay engineers are aware of this problem but eBay management continues to promote use of ''free'' shipping for FP30 listings. Another example of eBay's  glitchy  software that daily creates  additional headaches for Sellers trying to cope with eBay's latest ''enhancement''.

Michael happy to hear that about the Bonanzle. ;-) Only about half of my ebay items load to google base now. and it is showing in the slack sales.
I tried free shipping ebay...sorry... people still buy items with shipping while the free sh items sit... rarely even get hits. so as soon as those are finished I will relist with shipping. thank you but no thank you. though Im sure its just my cookies! right? ma

Dick,

Don't let them get away with it! They pulled that stunt on the AU site. They put an advertising text link next to the bid button and a whole lot of folks started emailing and calling the advertiser.
The ad link soon disappeared.
You, the seller, paid for that space.
Do not let ebay put ads on your live listing.

Just wondering if the advertising scam being run by ebay (seller pays for the page, ebay charges outside seller to advertise on a paid page...huh!!) and new and more ad boxes etc. on Google and/or Ebay conglomerates are the same biz school grads that have run wall st./the big three/the banking industry into the ground with greed?  Just an idle thought while former power sellers await the apocalypse online...Rather Russ

interesting that yesterday, again, Griff insisted the eBay is NOT working with or willing to consider working with Googlebase.   Ina, anyway you can followup the interview with Matt Ackely and out if HE's willing to work with googlebase to get our listings back in there...easily. The GBSC is perfect for us "technology" challenged types.  It might offset the 45% drop off in traffic referred to my store from EBAY. And I'm raised in search.  Wanna be sick to your stomach fellow sellers? Go look at your traffic reports on ebay.  (before they decide to remove them cause they don't want us to know that they are NOT sending traffic to our stores - in or out of search.)

I had no problem with one of my products hitting no-3 under Google's main page (not the side-bar) out of slightly more than a million 'matches'. Only when I used the proper terms to describe it! Learn English and don't expect something for a ''General'' nothing definition/auction title such as ''depression glass'' when there are more false (or hopeful) listings for it than real. If the specific title of the pattern is much rarer like ''Green Indiana Horseshoe Flat Bottom Tumbler'' is more correct and it earns higher placement. When the person/collector who is actually looking to cut through the crap they USE PROPER TITLES. The lazier/ignorant you are with your listing title the less you count/place on Google's list. The mentioned title is not the one that got me to place that high. As mentioning the real one would alert people/competitors to the much more common product that I earn a place that high.
