Possible New eBay CEO Behind Yahoo, Google Ads
By: Ina Steiner
The Wall Street Journal's Mylene Mangalindan is out with another article on eBay - this time on John Donahoe, who she says may be replacing Meg Whitman as CEO soon. One interesting factoid that I don't remember being aware of is that Donahoe was behind the ads on the site that compete with eBay sellers' listings:
Ms. Whitman also charged Mr. Donahoe with leading companywide initiatives. In late 2005 and 2006, he headed discussions with Yahoo Inc. and Google Inc. about putting ads brokered by those companies on eBay's Web pages, which at the time was the largest Web site without third-party advertisements. Those revenue-sharing advertising agreements, potentially worth millions, allowed Yahoo to display ads on eBay's U.S. pages and allowed Google to display ads on eBay's international pages.
Mangalindan's article from Tuesday, which said Meg was getting ready to step down, caused a stir today (see previous blog post). She says in tomorrow (Wednesday)'s article, "Though Mr. Donahoe is widely seen as the leading candidate, Rajiv Dutta, president of the PayPal online-payment business, and Mr. Cobb are also considered contenders."
