The U.S. Postal Service announced a new, larger Priority Mail Flat-Rate Box that can be used for international shipments. The new Priority Mail Large Flat-Rate Box (12" x 12" x 5½") will sell for $12.95 domestic and $10.95 to APO/FPO addresses. Internationally, it's $29.95 to Canada or Mexico and $49.95 to all other countries. There is also a 5 percent online discount. Customers can begin using the new boxes March 3, 2008.

The current flat-rate box, introduced in November 2004, retails domestically for $8.95 regardless of the weight or delivery zone.

"We listened to our customers, and we're giving them a new box that lets them ship larger items while still enjoying the benefits of a flat rate," said Postmaster General John Potter. "Flat-rate boxes are very popular and the new, larger version provides even more value."

NONSENSE. USPS does NOT listen to it's customers. If they did, they would not have done away with SURFACE MAIL for overseas. AND try using media mail WITHOUT a delivery confirmation number, what a hassle. DHL and FEDEX are much better, and faster, and runs more smoothly.

This is great news for those of us who ship things that are too big for the current flat rate boxes.

Especially when those things are heavier than average.

Thank you, USPS.

is this in addition to the current box?

the new one really doesn't help much when shipping books, a deeper version of the current size would have been better.

if they REALLY want to listen to their customers they will figure out some sort of DC for first class international.

I'd like to know that too, Mindelec. I checked on usps.com and couldn't find anything about it.

The current 8.95 flat rate box is 11''x8.5''x5.5'', so I'm guessing they're discontinuing the smaller size.

It's bad enough they kicked first class postage for non-letters up over 100%, now they're doing this too? If they weren't a government protected monopoly, they'd been out of business long ago.

They will keep the current box, this new one is an addition, not a replacement.

Careful when using these boxes inverted to ship non prioty. Most of the time they get thru, once in awhile as in the goons at Selkirk NY PO will hassle sellers for inside boxes going non-prioty.

By jsicolts ''Careful when using these boxes inverted to ship non prioty. Most of the time they get thru, once in awhile as in the goons at Selkirk NY PO will hassle sellers for inside boxes going non-prioty.''

These boxes are given out FREE as part of the over all charge(s) associated with Priority and Flat Rate mailing.  People who use the USPS as a source of FREE shipping materials and then ship using lower rate services or worse yet, UPS and/or FEDEX really burn me.

Know wonder the USPS rates are going up all the time.  IF they were smart they would have their boxes marked on both sides so this practice (and its cash flow) would stop!!

Over & above my concerns with the above statement, the larger flat rate box is a GOOD THING - you'd be amazed how many small time eBay sellers are not even aware of the flat rate boxes at all!!  I'd agree with an earlier posting however, deeper would have been better as well.

The larger flat rate box is a very prudent move for USPS.  I'm a very large shipper and use the USPS for Post Office Box and International orders.  The smaller flat rate box works for about 5% of my international shipments.  The addition of the larger box will enable me to lower my International/Hawaii/Alaska/PR and APO shipping thus increasing my sales and thus revenue for USPS.  The larger box will enable me to ship large heavy items that can't quite fit into the current flat rate box.  How can anyone question whether this is a good or bad move.  It is absolutely a great move for USPS.

By the way does anyone know when these new boxes will be available?

WHAT KATHERINE SAID.  Anyone using these FREE boxes for anything other than their intended purpose is a thief.  They steal from all of us and make the rest of us pay higher prices.  The only time it is appropriate to turn these boxes inside out is AFTER they have already been used once as intended.  Then, rather than throw them away, it is acceptable to turn them inside out and recycle them.  Perhaps this is was jsicolts is referring too.

The dimensions on these boxes suggest USPS is going after B&M customers. 12x12x5.5 is traditionally a "gift box", so by having the exact same dimensions means that B&M stores can now offer a mailing service to customers and know the exact cost of shipping. I seriously doubt the prices will vary for Flat Rate Box - that'll be too much administrative work plus all the technology adjustments you'd have to make for it.

Woops. didn't read carefully. Man, another price for Flat Rate Box is going to be a big headache with PC Postage Vendors now having to code for two different fee structures for Flat Rate Box (FRB).

I wish they would offer, like UPS, $100 or so insurance Included w/each shipment @ no additional charge. USPS insurance fees are unbelievably high compared to UPS, & usually eat up any flat rate savings if you need to add insurance.
