eBay's Strange Bedfellows in the Nation's Capitol

eBay CEO Meg Whitman is entertaining at her home tonight in Atherton, but it's business - political business, that is. Whitman is holding a fundraiser for US Presidential candidate Mitt Romney. And this week, eBay sellers will march (figuratively) to Washington, DC as part of eBay's "United States of eBay" to share their stories with their members of Congress.

eBay has other friends in Washington. eBay's subsidiary PayPal had a guest blogger on its PayPal Blog last week - the controversial Jim Glassman of the American Enterprise Institute. PayPal hired Glassman to conduct research, and then (bizarrely) invited him to post on the PayPal blog.

The New York Times profiled eBay's lobbying efforts in a 2006 article. Here's what reporter Katie Hafner had to say, "As the company has spread its innovative and influential wings across the Internet, it has also woven together a muscular and wily lobbying apparatus that spans 25 states."

If Whitman decides to leave Silicon Valley, she'll likely feel right at home in Washington, DC.
