Airport Security Grabs eBay Seller's Balls

By: David Steiner

The free balls eBay gave away during its eBay Live conference in Boston were supposed to help users relieve stress by squeezing them. But for at least one seller, the possession of the balls turned into a very stressful situation.

When going through the security check at Logan International Airport in Boston to go home, he was pulled aside when the eBay balls were discovered in his carry-on bag. The problem? They were filled with a liquid gel, and if you've traveled lately, you know you are limited to 3.5 ounces of liquid that should be kept in a plastic baggie and shown to security staff.

The seller was distraught that a conference give-away turned into a reason for scrutiny, especially when he (and security guards) realized he was carrying a keychain that contained a box cutter.

Some days, it doesn't pay to get up in the morning. Happily, our now ball-less seller made it home in one piece and can laugh about his eBay Live adventure.

What is the opposite of Windorphins? That is what this seller was experiencing.

Great blog title by the way!

Eeek! I never thought of that, and I took those balls through three different lots of security on the way home (including Logan).

Logan security ignored my eBay ball but did examine the little bottle of Chipolte sauce someone was handing out.

Yes, I picked up several of those squishy balls to bring home to my kids - and realized they better go in my checked luggage. Next time I'll think twice about the freebies I pick up! The PowerSeller coffee cups are great. Regards-

Nice turn of phrase, David!

Another good reason to send stuff from trade shows home separately.

I guess you could argue that the balls aren't really containing liquid - its really more of a gel-like substance. But I guess they're banning toothpaste, so the definition must be pretty broad.
