Thoughts on eBay Developers Program Keynote

Unlike last year, there was no Las Vegas-style trapeze act at the eBay Developers Program keynote session. The main event on Monday morning was the presentation screen when Adobe Chief Software Architect Kevin Lynch demonstrated Adobe AIR (formerly Apollo). The technology allows developers to create applications that use web browser technology integrated with the desktop.

Alan Lewis showed off Project San Dimas, a desktop eBay experience based on Adobe AIR. The app lets users access commonly used features quickly (you have to see it to understand the interface). I had talked to two developers before the show who had seen San Dimas and weren't excited about what it could do for them. It's eBay's job this week to get developers excited about the potential of programming with AIR to develop tools that will engage eBay buyers and sellers. And indeed, John Donahoe's address was very much the pep talk.

Max Mancini unveiled five new web services to help developers build applications more quickly (see eBay's press release published on AuctionBytes.com).

Whether it's the early hour (many attendees are coming from California, so throw in the time zone change), or the venue (Boston being more sedate than Las Vegas), but the show is low-key - so far. Maybe attendees will liven up after the late-afternoon beer bash and evening visit to the Blue Man Group.

I'm podcasting from the show - look for an interview with seller Danell Love who came to the DevCon to learn about the Affiliate program…. If you are here in Boston at the conference, and want to participate in a podcast, seek me out!

Hi Ina, I've had a look at the Beta for San Dimas and I have to agree it is underwhelming. I do think some enterprising developers can make use of Adobe AIR though.

I'll be at "Live" on Weds. I'm hoping to get to the meet and Greet. Hope to see you there.
