AuctionBytes conducted a survey recently and is publishing the results in the March 18, 2007, issue of the AuctionBytes-Update newsletter. This is a 6-month follow-up to the survey we conducted in September 2006 to try and measure where readers were selling and where they were intending to sell 6 months out.

The impetus for the initial survey was the enormous negative reaction from sellers to eBay's Store fee increases and "Store to core" messaging of last summer.

Please take a look at the survey results, and post a comment if you have thoughts on what it all means! And thanks to readers who took the time to participate in the survey.

For me, one of the most interesting statistics was re. own ecommerce website. 22% have one now, 21% intend to have one in six months. This is totally counterintuitive and apparently counter to the ''away from eBay'' trend of all your other figures. I'd love some more information on what these people are doing: moving off the net altogether? Realising that marketing your own site is too much like hard work and you *do* get something in return for eBay fees after all?

Re. the missing up-to-1057 people - why don't you ask for email addresses and permission to contact again in six months for the next survey? Would be interesting to have more continuity on how people's plans change.

I often hear eBay sellers say they're not going to sell there anymore. I remember hearing PESA sellers in late 2004 saying they were going to soon stop selling on eBay. ALL of them are still selling on eBay. So I'd love a measure of ''money put where mouth is.'' I'd love to poll the SAME people year after year, and see who SAID he or she would stop selling on eBay, who did, and when. That would be a great piece of information.

Tell me how it is worth your time to list an item for $.99 on Ebay, especially if you are putting a buy it now or gallery picture.  Fees could be as high as $.60 and you havne't even sold it and gotten the final value fee.

There is no guarantee that respondents to both surveys are the same individuals.

As a result, drawing conclusions is likely to be no more enlightening than making educated guesses based upon heresay.

I think if you poll people as to who was selling on ebay exclusively in 2004 and who are selling on ebay and other venues now, it would be an eye opener.  I know most of the sellers I know, myself included, now stock several venues instead of exclusively on ebay.  Since 2004 they have been treating sellers like dirt - and their sales have been slipping because of it...period!
