Alerting Systems for Wanted Items on eBay

By: Ina Steiner

I received a question from a reader about wanted items on eBay. "I'm sure your inbox is full of questions but I sincerely pray that you take the time to answer this one. Do you know of any software or method that will alert the user INSTANTLY when a desired eBay saved search item comes available for sale? Thank you in advance for ANY help you can provide."

The first that came to mind is MyBaboon, which notifies shoppers by email when an item they are looking for is listed on eBay.

The second thing that came to mind is eBay's own RSS feeds. Do a search, and when the results page comes up, scroll down and look for the RSS button. Click on the button, and then add that URL to your RSS feed reader. Many other marketplaces also have RSS alerting capability, including classifieds sites. If you are unfamiliar with RSS, I wrote an article about it in 2004.

I am sure there are other services out there - please leave a comment if you have any suggestions.

Mybaboon sounded like a great idea to me- I'd like a service like that! So I checked it out. Nowhere on the site will they tell you what the service costs! That seems quite disreputable to me. What a sneaky way to sell a service. A ten day free trial followed by a charge and involving the disclosure of sensitive personal finacial information, but no hint what it is going to cost! Then they have the longest, most confusing and most self- protecting- no matter what they do,you will be powerless- terms of service I have ever seen. It sounds like you have to sign over the rights to your firstborn!

It sounds like they will gather information about you and get to use it anyway they want, forever.

You'd need a lawyer to dare sign up for this service. What a shame- sounded like  neat idea!

The eBay browser from the above site is free, has no spyware, and will alert you to new listings, based on your personal search criteria, immediately.

The author is friendly and quick to respond. He also frequents alt.marketing.online.ebay .

(I am not affiliated with the browser - I just use it sometimes.)
