eBay Considering Changes to Feedback System?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is conducting a survey about feedback, and one question has some sellers upset at the idea that eBay might force them to leave positive feedback under certain circumstances. eBay asked survey recipients, "As a buyer, how would you prefer to receive Feedback?"

eBay gave survey takers a choice of three responses: "I want sellers to leave me Feedback rating and comments as they do today"; "When I have quickly paid for my item, sellers can only leave me positive Feedback"; and "When I have quickly paid for my items, eBay will automatically leave me positive Feedback."

You can read the story on the AuctionBytes homepage on Monday in the Newsflash section at the top of the page. We'll post updates here as they become available. Please leave your comments below.

Update 11/19/07: eBay spokesperson Catherine England responded by email to our inquiry about the survey:

As part of our ongoing evaluation of Detailed Seller Ratings we have surveyed members twice before with similar surveys. As part of the surveys, we sometimes ask members about other aspects of the Feedback system and different options.

Last week's survey was designed to gather input from members who had recently left Feedback.

We continually evaluate the efficacy of the current system and will survey our community from time to time about different options. It doesn't mean any changes are imminent.

As we discuss options we want to understand our member's opinions; they are an important data point, not the only data point but an important one.

I've said for a long time - when they start tinkering with the feedback system it's all downhill from there..

You can see the results of the last go round & this is just more of the same.

The further they get from Pierre's original vision, the worse it gets..

They are truly clueless........

Are they serious ? We're basically forced to accept paypal already. So someone immediately pays with paypal, gets automatic positive feedback, then does a charge reversal which gets ruled in their favor (even though they actually received their item)........so they end up with a free item, pos fb, AND the ability to neg the seller and the seller is stuck having left a scammer a positive. Yeah uhhuh right sounds like a wonderful system.

SELLERS HAVE A HARD ENOFF TIME WITH BUYERS TO GIVE THE POWER OF GETTING POS FEEDBACK JUST FOR BUYING IS FLAT OUT WRONG.THERE ARE AS MANY BAD BUYERS OUT THERE AS THERE ARE SELLERS MOST SELLERS REALY TRY TO MAKE PROBLEMS WRIGHT FOR THE BUYERS,I JUST MIXED UP SOME SHIPPING LABLES AND SENT THE WRONG ITEM TO A BUYER WE PAYPALED THE RETURN SHIPPING COST AND HIS CORRECT ITEM , HE SAID HE WOULD NOT RETURNE THE WRONG ITEM  TILL I GAVE HIM SOME FREE ITEMS, AND FREE SHIPPING ON THEM.SO DON'T PUT ALL THE BUYERS AS BEING BETTER THEN THE SELLERS. LET'S KEEP THIS A 2 WAY STREET,1 VERY SAD THING IS WHEN A BUYER DOES NOT PAY WE CAN TELL OTHERS ABOUT THEM WITH OUT FEAR OF NEG FEEDBACK.NONE PAYING BUYERS SCHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO LEAVE FEED BACK. FIX THAT AND LEAVE US SELLERS ALONE. THERE WILL ALLWAYS BE BUYERS BUT YOU ARE LOSSING YOUR SELLERS TO OTHER AUCTIONS.

Its ABOUT TIME they deal with the sleazy sellers who retaliate neg for neg after the buyer pays fine and receives JUNK from the seller.

This will be AWESOME, can you imagine the power shift this will bring.  Finally its the age of the buyer!

NEGATIVE, seller charged $2 over postage

NEGATIVE seller took 2 days to ship

NEGATIVE, item was shipped in a used box

MUAHAHAHHHA you bad sellers will finally get what you had coming to you!!!

If Buyers get an automatic positive for paying, Sellers should get an automatic positive for shipping.  Or does anyone else think there's more to a transaction than paying and shipping?

If buyers receive a positive feedback just for paying, then buyer feedback ratings would simply be useless. It seems to me that eBay is moving towards the elimination of buy-side feedback. Not a bad idea, but it's a major shift away from community. No doubt it will anger many sellers. Some will take it in the behind, some more intelligent sellers will get off of eBay and onto their own websites sooner.

I recently changed from leaving immediate feedback on payment, to waiting for buyer feedback first.  What was I thinking before?  How can a seller rate a buyer before delivery and acceptance?

I leave +feedback as soon as a transaction is completed, knowing that it will indicate to other sellers that the sale was completed quickly. In turn,it is very difficult to discern this information when a seller waits weeks or more to post feedback.A simple solution would be for the Paypal paid date to be entered in the comment field, still leaving it to the decretion of sellers as to when to post their actual feedback-ie:item paid, feedback pending.Ebay's energies would be better spent cleaning up the multiple user id's and inactive accts.,that make it so difficult for sellers to screen bidders.

I have always left feedback at payment as a seller, but don't like the idea of being forced to.

The funny thing is eBay has caused most of this problem with their HORRIBLE mutual withdrawal policy.

Larry, get back on your meds....

It does not suprise me yet again, this abrasive idea to blame the sellers for ebays overall bad business performance.

It's always blame the sellers, correct the sellers, fix the sellers. I say ebay can do ALOT with ebay to fix EBAY.

These surveys have a purpose, as they are the first creation before becoming permanent policy. A policy that I believe, is ill advised.

Ebay reeks terribly of bad leadership right now. When you see a company stumbling for direction, seemingly with no clear course it speaks volumes!

This new feedback slander system, if it gets initiated, will have multiple ebay benefits. Not the least of which, it will drop more sellers out of the paypal protection program. Imagine that, another way for ebay to pay less claims, and steal revenue from hard working sellers. It's no wonder that the ebay brass likes the idea!!

If you look at Amazon you see a company with direction, a company with a course of future growth. A company that built a solid foundation, before they went and built the house.

''Ebay is not Amazon''. They are like comparing apples and oranges. Ebay is now losing serious market share to Amazon and they are trying desperately to stop it. Yet the ebay selling model is way different than the Amazon site. Ebay would have to adopt and become much more fundamentally like Amazon (if not identical) to control fraud and give buyers the TRUE confidence that they need when making purchases.

Putting yet another bandaid on a feedback system that does not guarrantee a customers purchase is not really going to fix the patient.

Without leadership at ebay to make some tuff decisions this company will continue on its decline. It's not going to be easy for ebay to regain it's dominence of the market once lost. I suspect it's already to late. If not, it shortly will be, as I don't see any of the tuff changes being made.

Hey ebay?? Your sellers are not the problem! Go look in the mirror and fix yourself! Contrary, the sellers are your biggest asset! Don't throw out the gold like it's scrap, we're the best thing you've ever had....

Hey Larry,

Who cares if I charge exactly $2 over actual shipping?  I am giving you an excellent price AND excellent service as compared to my competitors.  I deserve to be negged for giving YOU a good deal?  If I am giving good deals, why can't I eke out a profit by having handling fees cover my shipping/handling costs?

Argh...I love how people think I deserve to suffer because I did the right thing and the customer received excellent service.

Out of interest I always have and always will leave positive feedback as soon as someone pays.

It doesn't seem to have affected my feedback ratings - no negatives out of nearly 6000 feedbacks.

OK, from the buyer's point of view here are a couple of nightmare stories.  I have been an eBay and PayPal user since 1995.

1) I purchased a software package.  Payment was made within 30 minutes of close.  Package arrived and, in spite of description that it was original and legal, it was in fact a pirated copy.  I notified the publisher and posted neg feedback and received neg feedback in return. I paid by check, so no refund was possible.

2) I purchased a subscription to a magazine.  Payment was made within an hour of close of the auction. I never received the subscription, and was ignored when I requested a status report on the magazine.  Negative feedback was left and received. PayPal stated I was outside of the period I could get a refund.

3) I purchased a pair of bridle rosettes.  I paid within two hours.  Three weeks later, after being ignored via email I receive a letter from a pack & ship company that they had been unable to contact seller and that he needed to pay the postage to have the package sent.  Since the seller refused to respond, did I want to pay the $8 shipping to receive the package I had already paid for?  I paid the shipping, left neg feedback for the seller and soon after received neg feedback in response.  Seller then closed account and I was unable to get refund out of either eBay or PayPal.

SO, lets keep things in perspective here.  We ALL need protection.  In each case I - as buyer - did everything I was obligated to do and did so in a prompt manner.  I got screwed.  This has happened enough that I often question why I continue to buy on eBay.  Sellers need protection.  Buyers also need protection.  eBay and PayPal do neither.

What happens when sellers have to file Unpaid Item Notices to get paid?  Will the buyer still get a positive even if it has taken them 2 weeks to get paid?

I feel for buyers, I've been burned as a buyer twice--knock on wood--

As a seller I've received retalitory feedback when I have left a negative for non payment.  So, will they make a system where people who have not paid for an item cannot leave a negative?

I feel for ebay buyers who get stung.

Not only because I hate seeing people ripped off, but because it tarnishes the reputation of the decent sellers by association.

I assume you check the feedback of the seller before buying?

Because if a deal seems too good to be true, it usually is!

Another point is always give a seller a chance to make things right by communication as genuine mistakes can happen.

To go bang into a negative without doing so is not fair.

My personal feeling is that for a seller not to leave a positive as soon as an item is paid for is a subtle form of blackmail.

I state clearly in my auctions that I will leave feedback as soon as payment is received and have had 100's of appreciative e-mails from buyers or potential buyers thanking me for my attitude.

All we can do as sellers is be totally honest in our descriptions, put plenty of good pictures in, communicate with the buyer, pack professionally and safely and ship as soon as possible.

I'm well aware that there are idiots out there but so far I've escaped them!

What questions you see on the survey are based on whether you replied to the first question, "I am primarily a buyer"; " I amprimarily a seller" or "I buy and sell equally".   As a seller I never saw the question about how feedback should left (as is now, by ebay, automatically when paid).  As a buyer I got that question.

So I guess I will take the survey a few thousand more times as a buyer and indicate I want feedback to continue as it...me and ten thousand of my closest friends.  Thanks for the heads up Ina...without you, ebay would trample on everyone - buyer and seller..

How is it that a non paying bidder can leave a seller negative feedback after not paying for an item (therefore not completing the transaction)????? The only negatives I have are from non paying bidders that got an unpaid item strike. Two were from foriegn countries.
I have had to block all bidders from countries I don't list in. I for one do not think it's fair at all. After complaining to ebay and filing a dispute over the feedback I was basically told tough, live with it.

As has been said before, it seems that eBay Management is getting more out of touch all the time.  It is seriously time for a major shakeup at eBay, Meg Whitman needs to be removed, she is dragging the company down.  And now with her 200 million shares of stock, her golden parachute is what WE are paying for!!!

eBay used to be so fun to sell on, now it is pure misery, most of us do it out of necessity, not because we enjoy it.  Such a shame to ruin a good thing.
