That dog just won't hunt.

I don't suppose ebay feels any guilt for all the hype they have pushed over the years and how the state folks can make a living selling on e-bay.

Jeetil Patel downgrade eBay to ''Sell''

EBay Declines on 3Q Loss, Weighed Down by Charges; Deutsche Bank Downgrades on Fundamentals

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of eBay Inc. declined in Thursday premarket trading, after the online auction operator recorded a third-quarter loss on hefty charges related to its Skype telecommunications segment.

EBay on Wednesday reported a loss for the first time since the second quarter of 1999, as results were weighed down by a $900 million write-down in the value of Skype. Adjusted profit and sales, however, easily topped Wall Street expectations.

Still, the results caused Deutsche Bank analyst Jeetil Patel to downgrade the stock to ''Sell'' from ''Hold'' and voice concerns about eBay's growth prospects.

Patel said a recent fee discount raises questions about the health, growth and positioning of its core business. ''If business is that good, why reduce fees?'' Patel wrote.

Patel also said eBay is losing active users faster than it adds new ones, and said it is critical that eBay reverse this in the fourth quarter. Patel was also discouraged by a decline in overall listings.

On the other hand, Goldman Sachs analyst Anthony Noto hiked his price target to $51 from $43 and said shares are worth buying.

Noto said there are several catalysts that should lift shares toward his price target, including strength in the PayPal electronic payment business and expanding margins in the fourth quarter.

The stock declined $1.20, or 3 percent, to $39.40, after ending at $40.60 in regular trading.
