Watch for Scam with PayPal Twist

By: Ina Steiner

I saw a discussion about a scam that is a twist on the Counterfeit Cashier's Check Scheme, this time involving PayPal. Here's how it works.

The scam buyer tells the seller his PayPal account is temporarily unavailable because he also sells, and one of his buyers told eBay the item he sold her was a fake.

"It wasn't (a fake) because I had proof of where I bought it from. Paypal held the sums in my paypal account and its still under investigation. Until then, my paypal account is unavailable."

The scam buyer tells the seller he'll have one of his customers send him money:

"I have to pay you for the item i recently purchased from you (through PAYPAL). My customer has to pay me for the item he recently purchased (through PAYPAL). I could have my customer forward the payment to your paypal account, you can deduct the amount that i owe you from the total, and send me the rest ..."

And of course the scam buyer plays on the seller's greed by offering a reward. "The only risk if you agree is to earn a few hundred bucks."

I'm not sure if it's a new scam, I don't remember hearing of anything quite like this before.

Thanks to the seller for sharing this with others so everyone can be on the alert for such scams!

This sounds a lot like it is money laundering...
