Google Checkout Runs New Promotion

Max Leisten of ChannelAdvisor reported yesterday that Google is running a new promotion this week to give first-time Google Checkout buyers a $10 bonus toward their first order of $10 or more (before shipping and tax). Max said the new promotion will run through February 15.

A similar promotion over the holidays seemed to have been a success for merchants who were able to offer customers the discount, and is a powerful incentive for sellers to sign up for Checkout. As of yet, not announcement on the "Official Google Checkout Blog."

Meanwhile, Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. said in a January 4th research note that Google Checkout  hasn't reached critical mass yet (no surprise there). The Wall Street firm held a conference call featuring Dana Todd, President and Kevin Lee, Board of Directors of SEMPO (The Search Engine Marketers Professional Organization):

"There appears to have been an increase in the click-thru rates for ads with a Google Checkout badge, but the speakers do not believe that Checkout has gained critical mass on the consumer side. The fact that the Google Checkout badge increases click-thru rates raises an interesting question about the impact of including other graphics on the creative."

Hi Ina - do you think we should put up promotions on our web store? Have you heard from other sellers if this promo works?

I heard the promotion was a great success for Best Buy over the holidays. They heavily marketed the promotion, and word-of-mouth helped. I haven't heard other reports. But if you offer your customers $10 off, that sounds like a powerful incentive!
