eBay Blogging Controversy Revealed on ValleyWag

By: Ina Steiner

eBay (employee) Bloggers must be feeling a bit restrained these days after one of their own got in trouble for a post slamming Google's payment service this week (link). But the lesson in this experience is not for bloggers (there's already a well publicized history of employees getting in trouble over their blogs). No, this lesson is for corporate communications and public relations people.

By pulling the offending post and replacing it with a one that stated his opinions are his own, the blogger garnered more attention for his post, making it all the way to ValleyWag, the gossip rag of Silicon Valley (link). Not to mention that the original post is all over the Internet anyway (including in the comments section of the blog itself).

When I wrote about eBay censoring blogs (link), I never envisioned the current situation arising.

Personally, I love blogs that have opinions and a casual, even feisty style. But for corporate employees, it can be a tricky minefield to navigate.

Interesting blog Ina, I have always said for decades, that you DO NOT put into a an email on a chat, a public or private forum, or a blog- something that can come back and bite you in the butt.

Remember the whole world has the ability to read what is posted on the internet and respond accordingly.

A lesson to be learned. That is why I stll use the phone when I have something I don't want to put into text format.

Have a great 4th.

Probably not a good idea for the author to be giving away competitive intelligence...
makes Google's eBay SWOT analysis a little easier....

Happy 4th
