More thoughts from the DevCon
By: Ina Steiner
I forgot to mention that the first thing I saw at the airport on Friday night were huge banners - advertising Alibaba. The orange signs dominated the baggage claim and read, "More Power, Sellers." Alibaba is quite good at guerilla marketing.
Ron Blatt from Shopping Safari asked some great questions at the DevCon, and seemed to be getting a lot out of it. He mentioned he was happy to learn about the Terapeak seller-specific research tool he read about in AuctionBytes recently.
His colleague Victor said Chris Anderson's session on the long tail was the best one. Chris had sent me an advance copy of his book, The long tail, due out in a few weeks. It's great.
I also snagged a video interview with Chris Anderson for AuctionBytes.TV. This was actually the first time I had to set up the camera and mic, so it doesn't look professional, but I can assure you this is some great content of interest to eBay sellers!
I went to a session on eBay's Affiliates program. Something I hadn't realized is that eBay Affiliates can get eBay RSS feeds with their affiliate tracking information embedded in the links,….They're also allowed access to proprietary eBay data, though I didn't get the details on that…
If you are going to eBay Live, check out JDT Technologies "orb." I met Tobe Goldfinger Saturday night, she told me she sells an orb that turns colors to alert you when there may be a problem with your eBay account. I wasn't clear on how much she was charging for this alerting service, I will be on the lookout for it.
Julia Wilkinson's new book came from the publishers, it looks awesome. It's due out in a few weeks and is called the eBay Price Guide. I can't wait to delve into it. I want to take a picture of her holding it and will post to the blog. She and I are having a great time and are looking forward to the start of eBay Live.
Last night I ventured out of the Mandalay Bay complex for the first time. Wow! Vegas is something else. Disney for men (ahem) and women (shopping galore). We had dinner at Mon Ami Gabi at the Paris hotel. If you like steaks in a French atmosphere, it's for you.
eBay Research Labs - A Gem!
I discovered a gem inside eBay - the eBay Research Labs. It's like Xero parc. Think of a staff of brainy genius guys (they wouldn't tell me how many people work there!) thinking about the future of ecommerce and what it will look like in 3 - 5 years.
Senior Director Eric Billingsley was THE nicest guy. A nuclear engineer by training. The eBay Research Labs is where Louis Monier worked before he left this time last year for Google.
Raghav Gupta and Adrian Cockcroft were with Eric and they were demonstrating their new search technology.
Time to start a new day!
