Skype Learns eBay Math

"How Many Users Does Skype Really Have?" asks the TechDirt blog (link).

I can't comment on the numbers TechDirt is throwing around about Skype, but I'm not surprised they are confused by eBay numbers. Here at AuctionBytes, we call it "eBay Math."

For instance, try getting the number of unique active registered users on eBay - I even saw CEO Meg Whitman "not" answer this question at a shareholders meeting. (The critical word here is "unique" - most regular eBay sellers have multiple IDs.) And the fraud statistic eBay cites is meaningless.

In Red Sox nation, we have a phrase, "that's just Manny being Manny." I guess eBay's press release about Skype registered users is "just eBay being eBay." (An eBay employee calls it marketing, not sure SEC would agree that that's appropriate.)
