eBay CEO in Denial over Fraud

eBay CEO Meg Whitman gave a press conference today in Brussels and commented on the Tiffany lawsuit against eBay over counterfeit items. Here are some statements from Whitman, according to the IDG News Service (link):

Having customers maintain trust in the eBay service is crucial.

The number of transactions resulting in disputes is "less than one hundredth of 1 percent" and is falling.

eBay helps mediate disputes, with customer support representatives getting involved in cases.

I'm really disappointed to hear the spin continue. Since Katie Hafner's article in the New York Times, people are now talking about the problem of fraud and counterfeits online. eBay has a chance to be a leader in fighting fraud. Instead, it looks like eBay executives want to pretend it's business as usual.
