Simmons Silverman Business Plan Competition
By: Ina Steiner
Just back from attending the first annual Silverman Business Plan Competition at the Simmons School of Management, the only women-only business school in the country (link).
Six women presented business plans, and judges made their final decision and announced the award. Congratulations to all of them, fantastic ideas and passion, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at Simmons.
What struck me afterward was that none of businesses dealt with high-tech; no software, no hardware, no social networking, etc. Two were brick-and-mortar retail businesses; two were product marketing; one was corporate consulting (to oversimplify); and one was a music management service, which won the award and had the most connection to the Internet.
It was really refreshing to hear entrepreneurs who have different expectations about what they want to get out of their businesses. Much closer to the online auction seller than to the online auction service provider.
The keynote speaker was also fantastic - Trish Karter of the Dancing Deer Baking Co. who was amazingly open about her life and business. This is a company to watch.
