eBay Auction Raises Security Concerns

By: Ina Steiner

In today's AuctionBytes Newsflash, I wrote about an eBay auction that contained Javascript that would start a process designed to install malicious code on viewer's computers (link).

If a scammer can do this in an eBay auction listing, they could just as easily do it on their own website. So if you search on Google or Yahoo and click on a website, it could do the same thing (and it does).

The point is, it's not just an eBay problem. However, it does highlight the need for eBay to be on the ball about security issues.

My friend John just tried to update his anti-virus software over the weekend (he had let it lapse a year or so). But because he is using a computer with Windows 98, not XP, he couldn't get the anti-virus software to install!

It would be really nice if the anti-virus and security issues were taken care of at the ISP level so consumers wouldn't have to be security experts. But for now, make it's best to make sure you are protected. Here's one service that provides protection (link).

Hi,  I'm very happy with the FREE anti virus software that I found here at  It does the job and is more user friendly than Norton.  You can get updates daily and they download fast.  Daniel
