AOL Exits Classifieds as Google & Microsoft Enter

As Google and Microsoft gear up new classified ad services, AOL is pulling out, according to an email sent by TIAS to its merchants (See today's AuctionBytes Newsflash story, hot off the press: link). It seems amazing, given how hot classifieds are right now, and how long AOL has worked on its classified ad system.

AOL was king of advertising when AuctionBytes launched back in 1999, and in fact, AOL was a huge factor in eBay's success. I inquired about advertising on AOL back then, and because of its agreement with eBay, I would not be able to mention a competing auction site within 4 clicks of any URL included in my ad on AOL!! This enabled eBay to effectively shut out its competitors - even any mention of its competitors.

Companies like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft want content to drive paid search, and classifieds are seen as both content and as a source of ad revenue. It will be interesting to see who seals the deal with AOL and what they will do with AOL Shopping.

I think Google is going to give Ebay a good "run for their money" in time.
