Etsy promised to fix a shipping glitch 2 weeks ago, but sellers continue to experience the problem, and Etsy's last update was over a week ago, on March 10th.
"Hey all! There's a team looking into what's causing some USPS labels to stay in 'pre-transit' even when there's activity visible on the USPS tracking site. Once I've got more details from our Shipping team, I'll update this thread."
The specialist returned on March 10th to post:
"Hey all! My apologies for the delay in updating this thread. Our engineers pushed a fix recently to prevent new orders with valid USPS tracking from getting stuck in 'pre-transit' when there's tracking activity accessible. We're still working on updating orders currently stuck showing as 'pre-transit' so they won't have any negative impact on things like Shipping Score. Once we've got a clearer timeline for when that fix will be live I'll update this thread."
But sellers continue to report the problem is still happening to them. And it appears Etsy is applying
payment reserves on some sellers as a result of the glitch - that's when Etsy holds back a percentage of funds from sellers' sales.
Compounding the issue - sellers have begun reporting that Etsy customer service is requiring them to provide them with Personal Identifiable Information before they will offer assistance.
One seller said an Etsy rep told them they needed their social security number, bank card number and bank account number.
Another seller said a rep requested the last four numbers of their bank acct, their current shop balance, and the amount of their last disbursement before they could assist them.
A concerned reader who emailed us about the problem said an order they mailed on February 28th that was delivered still showed on Etsy as "pre-transit."
In addition to the fact sellers may have funds held as a result of Etsy's glitch, it also causes tension between buyers and sellers. "I had an upset customer wonder when I was sending their item, they never actually clicked on the tracking number because it said pre-transit," a seller wrote Saturday evening. "I'm so glad it delivered today. They thought I made a label and had not shipped it."
