Loophole for Gaining Positive Feedback on eBay?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

An eBay seller discovered a way for bad buyers and scammers to potentially gain positive feedback on eBay. The discovery started after he decided to change his settings to automatically leave positive feedback as soon as a buyer made a purchase from him, a move he said had been suggested during an episode of the eBay for Business podcast.

All went well until a buyer purchased an item and, a minute later, cancelled the transaction. "I didn't mind that part," he said. "I went ahead and canceled it - but what I didn't like is that the positive feedback was already left on his account."

An eBay rep said they weren't sure they would be able to remove the positive feedback he'd left for the "non-buyer" because it was positive.

It seems like eBay would have had similar requests long before this instance and have figured out a way to remove such feedback. After all, the "buyer" is being rewarded for cancelling an order.

The seller said he was concerned that bad buyers and scammers might be able to use the "loophole" to gain positive feedback on their accounts - without ever having to consummate a sale.

In digging around, we found a different case in which a seller asked on the eBay discussion boards if they could remove a positive they received from a buyer. It sounds like an unlikely request, but the seller explained the buyer had revealed in the feedback comment that the seller had refunded a lost order. The seller felt that comment led to a subsequent increase in Item Not Received claims.

Other sellers responded, saying it was impossible to remove a positive feedback on eBay, no matter the circumstances.

In the case of the reader who wanted to remove the feedback for the buyer who had backed out of the transaction, it seems eBay should have easily been able to remove the feedback left since the order was immediately cancelled.

Have you run into unusual feedback scenarios? Have you had luck getting eBay to remove feedback?

And should this seller be concerned about "buyers" abusing the auto-feedback feature?

It is really sad what eBay feedback has become. It appears that eBay simply wants sellers to rubber stamp positive feedback.  I don't even bother with it unless someone asks for it, and then I let them know that we only give feedback after feedback has been given.  This helps to prevent a buyer from receiving positive feedback only to turnaround and slap you with a SNAD. No matter how bad a buyer is their feedback reads like a sappy Hallmark card.

It has been quite a few years since we had someone threaten to leave negative feedback if we did not do this or that.  We always responded with "I don't live in fear of negative feedback.  I always have the option to report you and respond to your feedback."  Not one of them left a negative after I messaged that.  And I always give the buyer an option to return an item if they are not pleased unless it is after the return window has closed.  No partial refunds or after the sale/delivery "coupons".

I don't auto anything on eBay!

"Other sellers responded, saying it was impossible to remove a positive feedback on eBay, no matter the circumstances."

This isn't true!

If you post someone's address it will be removed.
Use racist wording it will be removed.
Talk bad against eBay it will be removed.
All positive negatives will also be removed.

“ An eBay rep said they weren't sure they would be able to remove the positive feedback he'd left for the "non-buyer" because it was positive.”

Then this was an ignorant ‘representative’, purposefully or not.  It’s THEIR software. There is no possible way they can NOT be able to do anything they want with it.  They have demonstrated that.  They have removed’ feedback, altered feedback, monitized it, sanctified its subjectivity as fact, then ‘scrubbed’ it when it suited purpose or back room deal.

It no longer serves its ‘intended’ purpose now that it’s been ham-handed by what eBay has done, and at best it continues to be rendered untruthful, innacurate, and misleading by what they refuse to do and excuse through ignorant representation.

eBay feedback has been bred to the point it should be labeled with a disclaimer: For Entertainment Purposes Only.

They remove tons of negative feedback for their Mega Big Brand sellers.  So don't ever let them tell you that they can not remove feedback.

I only ever tried to get one feedback comment removed, and eBay did remove it. The feedback referenced my legal name, which was on the list of no-nos. Of course, that was around 20 years ago, so I don't know if that is still on the forbidden list of comments.

Rex -%101 correct

I forget which brand it was - we here and on other sites were watching live as each time you refreshed the page - more negatives would vanish before our eyes!

See (there are those who STILL think that eBay is some honest platform (but I cant name names or Ina will block the post), but if you REALLY look into eBay - you can plainly see its a CON (being they are the San Jose Mafia).

They want sellers to auto positive a buyers sale - because the more positive feedbacks (on any account) - the more the buyer will trust eBay ... "eBay has %100 honest sellers) and con them into making MORE purchases (in law its leading the witness).

Its all a sham rigged card game where the only people who get ahead are eBay and its mighty beloveds.

Yes there are a few smaller sellers that grow ("bless their hearts") but for most its a game and the house wins most times. eBay makes you THINK its a level playing field when its not.

Some here dont provide feedback - I wait 2-3 weeks untill Im "sure" (though on eBay you can never REALLY be sure of anything - sold doesnt mean sold on eBay) the transaction went ok. If the buyer gave me a positive - I give them one back.

Pace, that was ToysRUs. A friend of mine posted the live video to YouTube, showing hundred of negatives, most of which looked legitimate with complaints about being send used items, broken items, cancelled sales with the item being relisted for twice as much or other horror stories that obviously drove thousands of good buyers from ever using eBay again, being removed in real time. His video was removed from YouTube and he got a copyright strike for posting screen shots of eBay's website, something the eBay paid sycophants do on YouTube daily.

Don't cancel orders then when requested....you are not required to and Ebay will remove neg feedback if they leave one for that reason. That would solve your issue.

Shana

yes - I remember it happening - just couldnt place the name of the EBAY PARTNER they were covering for.

Not sure why Youtube gave them a copyright strike for showing the eBay website - as a user its within your right(s) to do so.

Ahhh must be friends helping friends!

eBay always does other companies bidding - better to trample a small seller then uphold the law (Im looking at you Casio)(and no selling out of the US is EXPORTING not IMPORTING)(but the dopes at eBay have a 3rd grade edumacation and dont understand the difference).

Recently, several buyers have bought an item, paid and immediately canceled. I give positive feedback upon payment. These buyers now have feedback of one. I tried to get the feedback removed but eBay said no. EBay should be worried about buyers that are using this trickery. The feedback on buyers is totally useless. That is why I just leave it automatically. I do block all these buyers. No reason to let the same buyer do it twice.

Ebay has had the option for sellers to leave automatic feedback for YEARS.  Certainly no where near a new option.

Sellers can easily resolve this issue themselves by going back and revising the setting they have on their account.  Go to your Site Preferences and then to Selling preferences.

In setting Automatic Feedback there are two different options you have to select from.
1.  Leave Feedback after the buyer has paid for the item.
OR
2.  Leave Feedback after the buyer has paid for the item AND has left me Positive Feedback.

Seller's Choice.

Not all buyers who ask to cancel a sale are bad buyers. No buyer makes money out of cancelling a sale and there's nothing dishonest about it.

Sellers need to get a grip and stop whining. There are many legit reasons why somebody might want to cancel.

As for leaving automated feedback... There's no point because feedback doesn't mean anything anymore since they remove deserved negative feedback for all sellers with high turnover and feedback scores.

Why Ebay hasn't changed feedback to the simple "I made a purchase" count still baffles me.  Since we can't leave negative feedback it just doesn't matter as feedback itself is worthless.

@Calling You Out

That kind of feedback is called a "positive negative" and would be removed upon request.

Any seller leaving automatic feedback is doing a disservice to the seller community.    Please stop it!
