Amazon grew sales 10% in North America in the 2nd quarter, year over year, but international sales fell 12% (not adjusting for the unfavorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates). Its AWS business grew 33%. Marketplace sales (North America and International together) grew 3.3%.
Consolidated sales (all three segments - North America, International, and AWS) grew by 7% in the quarter to $121.2 billion, compared with $113.1 billion in second quarter 2021. "Excluding the $3.6 billion unfavorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the quarter, net sales increased 10% compared with second quarter 2021," Amazon stated.
Here are a few other points of interest to online sellers:
Third-party sellers accounted for 57% of worldwide paid units in the second quarter (April, May, June) - excluding its Whole Foods Market grocery unit.
Amazon's sharp drop-off in headcount growth in the quarter was especially interesting in light of Shopify's news this week that it would lay off 10% of its workforce. Here's a look at Amazon's headcount growth since the first quarter of 2021:
Q1-2021: 51% Q2-2021: 52% Q3-2021: 30% Q4-2021: 24% Q1-2022: 28% Q2-2022: 14%
