Etsy created new badges to highlight sellers' customer service performance and said it would display the new badges for eligible sellers, even if they don't qualify for the Star Seller program.
Many Etsy sellers have been upset they cannot attain "Star Seller" status for various reasons outside their control, making the program controversial. In fact, ending the Star Seller program is one of the demands in a petition to
strike and boycott the site next week.
Etsy said the new customer service badges will be awarded based on shop performance as of April 1, and Etsy said it would be testing the new badges with shoppers over the next few weeks.
Sellers must have at least 10 orders and $300 in sales (before shipping and taxes) within the three-month review period in order to be eligible to receive the new badges.
The three new badges focus on shipping, speed-of-replying to messages, and 5-star reviews:
- Smooth shipping: 95% or more of your orders ship within your stated processing time and with tracking* or you purchased a shipping label on Etsy and you've received at least one physical order in the past three months.
- Speedy replies: You respond to 95% or more of initial messages from buyers within 24 hours (just the first message, not ongoing conversations) and you received at least one message in the past three months.
- Rave reviews: 95% or more of your reviews have 5-star ratings and you've received at least one review in the past three months.
Etsy sellers shared their thoughts about the new badges in
this thread on the Etsy boards, which started out on a positive note: "I support this new direction because it celebrates everyone for something. Very good job on the update."
The benefit of being a Star Seller goes beyond badges - Etsy actively features Star Sellers' listings. Friday's announcement makes no mention of doing the same with these individual badges. (As reported above, Etsy says it's still in testing mode when it comes to how it displays the badges to shoppers.)
