One Year Later, Is USPS Paid Tracking Worth It?

By: Ina Steiner

The USPS launched Premium Tracking over a year ago, just prior to the pandemic and before Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan retired and was replaced by Louis DeJoy.

Now called USPS Tracking Plus, it allows shippers (and recipients) to pay for extended tracking history beyond the 120 days offered with regular tracking offered at no charge (or 2 years for signature items).

The USPS markets the product as proof of delivery in the event of a dispute and as being suitable for small businesses, law offices, ecommerce marketplace, financial institutions, and pharmaceutical providers.

"Along with the extended access, your USPS Tracking Plus™ Statement may be used as USPS evidence of delivery to resolve disputes and claims," it states.

The fees haven't changed since introduced in January 2020, which range from $2.10 for 6 months of tracking availability to $9.99 for 10 years.

Have you tried out the optional service in order to get proof of delivery for an extended time period? Are there certain types of items where it would make sense to use this optional service?

I get that service for free. Every few weeks, I screen capture all delivery scans and back them up to two different hard drives. PayPal has sided with me when I need to use them against a scammer buyer. $2.10 for an extra 6 months or 45 seconds to take a screen capture. Time is money, as they say, but 45 seconds to save $2.10 is $168 an hour... certainly more than I make!

@lessthanthreerecords - I do the same. I've done it for years, and see no need to pay for something I have already established in my workflow.

Seems poorly designed service as you probably don't know that you need it until it's too late to subscribe.

It would surely be better either (a) just to charge a few cents extra when the label is sold with maybe a couple of retention options (12 and 60 months?) so the price is small enough that sellers in categories where this is helpful just buy the option for all their shipments.

And/or (b) charge a one time $5 fee for pulling the tracking results from the post-90 day archive and having them display again for a refreshed 12 month window?

I haven't done the math but there must surely be enough digits in the string not to need to recycle them in less than a year?

I never even thought ONCE about using this Solution in Search of a Problem.  $2.10 for ANY shipment ... no matter how cheap, no matter how dear?  Not a chance in Hades.
The VAST MAJORITY of my sales are sub $10 and Very VERY few are $20 or more.  Even on those $20 plus sales I'd have to have failed 3rd grade to want to HEDGE all of those sales by EATING 10 percent each and every time.

Nothing much in USPS is worth anything these days and this is one of those worthless activities with the way in which it is designed to work. Could have been much better designed but I am sure it was done by someone in a cubical needing to justify their employment existence rather than someone who actually would use it.

If you print out an end of day sheet and have the Post Office scan it, it proves that everything on that list has shipped. That plus the copies of your shipping labels are plenty of proof that you shipped. I really do not see the need to pay for additional tracking.

@fusgeyer - That method won't show proof of "delivery". However, screen shots of the entire tracking screen, once delivered, will provide that proof.
