Would You Add Product Videos to Your Etsy Listings?

Etsy is adding the ability for sellers to add product videos to their listings in addition to product photos. Sellers who have tried the feature in beta testing are enthusiastic.

Etsy will allow only one video per listing that must focus on the finished product. The videos must be between 5 and 15 seconds long (some sellers said they would like the ability to upload longer videos) and can be any one of the following video file types: MP4, MOV, FLV, AAC, AVI, 3GP, MPEG.

Note that Etsy will automatically remove audio from uploaded videos.

Etsy began allowing sellers to join a group to test it last month. Sellers who join the Video Listings Prototype group can upload videos, but unless you are in the group, you won't be able to see the videos.

In an article published in its Seller Handbook, Etsy wrote:

"Any experienced online seller knows how difficult it can be to ensure shoppers take the time to read detailed listing descriptions. Take advantage of the multimedia video format to address common buyer questions, showcasing your product from a variety of angles, conveying scale, and highlighting unique details of the materials and design. If you offer item variations, like different sizes, colors, or materials, think about ways to demonstrate these options in a video.

"For vintage items, a listing video can help communicate any signs of wear or flaws that a shopper might overlook in a written description, preventing customer service challenges down the line."

Etsy shared some examples of videos in the article.

Etsy also said, "Videos showing your product in use can clarify your product’s function and details, and help shoppers envision using it themselves."

Etsy said research it conducted in 2018 showed that adding a product video to an online listing can provide increased transparency that boosts buyer confidence and conveys valuable information that shoppers can't get from photos alone.

Etsy hosts its website on Google's cloud, and this could be mutually beneficial for both companies (Google owns YouTube.)

What do you think of the ability to add videos to your product listings?

How would a video ''provide increased transparency''?

If a seller claims a piece of jewelry is silver and turquoise, but is actually a silver base metal alloy with either acrylic or dyed howlite stones, how will a video disclose this?  It a piece of jewelry has a fake 925 mark, how will the video tell us it's not sterling silver?  If a clothing seller never gives measurements or fabric content info, how will a video tell me what I need to know?  If a seller lists a piece of vintage jewelry as bakelite when it's not, how will a video disclose the truth?

And I could keep going and going and going with examples.

Etsy has a problem with deceptive listings -- always has had.  The product videos are just another techie gimmick.

What Etsy listings ?
I don't go there anymore.
Even my customers know it's illegal to take that 12%.
eCrater folks. eCrater.

"Note that Etsy will automatically remove audio from uploaded videos."

If that is the case, then I'm not sure how a video would be more beneficial that still photos.

I second what The End stated. eCrater folks, eCrater.

I can sell a lot of thousands on eBay but not on Etsy. Apparently it's my fault because I don't understand their tags?

Their loss, not mine.

I don't know how they would expect vintage sellers ''to communicate wear or flaws'' in a mere 5 to 15 seconds without audio.

Nor would it be worth making a video on OOAK items, unless they happened to be high priced and highly desirable.

The site's attention span and support, is unlikely to last more than the usual 5 minutes, as per all of their roll-outs.

I wonder if they will give listings with a video a boost in placement like the “free shipping” fiasco, or better yet increase listing fees.  No thanks Etsy.

No, I don't want to add video.

I do want what I have wanted for years: better/simpler search engine access, a photo program that allows me to rotate and edit photos and not just crop,  a search function that functions; standalone Paypal.

But sure, suggest video - or how about holograms?! Could we get holograms????

Fantastic! As a lapidary and jeweler, much detail is lost in ''still photos''. Different stones display different levels of sparkle or shine, while metalwork displays the same variation that could greatly benefit from videos. And for all of us jewelers with crazy good sales on Etsy, and at healthy price points, ''videos'' will be a huge benefit. ''Movement'' allows the piece to come alive.
