Amazon Seller Fulfilled Prime Hit by Pandemic Concerns

Amazon sellers are reconsidering their use of Seller Fulfilled Prime (SFP) over concerns about pandemic-related delivery delays. Amazon requires merchants to fulfill SFP orders in 2 days to satisfy Prime members.

The issue came up on the Amazon discussion boards when a seller said they noticed Amazon was suppressing the Buy Box for SFP orders in favor of sellers who use Fulfillment By Amazon (FBA). "They don't trust that SFP sellers can deliver on time because of the pandemic, so they are burying us," the seller claimed.

Some sellers said they had already stopped using SFP because of delivery concerns and had switched to FBM (Fulfillment By Merchant) - in both cases, sellers fulfill the item themselves, but with regular FBM, there's no pressure to meet the strict 2-day delivery requirement.

One seller wrote, "I'm a long time SFP seller myself and when COVID came along, I switched my offers to regular old FBM. Why would you want to continue with SFP, knowing that one of the terms of the program is that you give Amazon permission to refund any buyer out of your pocket who's Prime order doesn't arrive on time. No thank you. Not in this environment."

The original poster said they used FedEx and had no issues with meeting the 2-day delivery requirement. That reminded us of an issue that came up over the holidays.

In December, the Wall Street Journal had reported that Amazon blocked sellers from using FedEx Ground for SFP Prime shipments citing a decline in FedEx performance heading into the final holiday push. Amazon lifted the temporary block in January.

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that FedEx was "strained" by the coronavirus and was limiting the number of items that Kohl's and other retailers could ship from certain locations.

Amazon closely monitors shipping-carriers' delivery performance and uses the data in the algorithm that determines which offers to display in the Buy Box.

Delivery performance is also impacted by location. eBay recently reported four states were experiencing shipping disruptions amid the coronavirus pandemic: New York, New Jersey, Michigan, and Illinois.

I am a prime member.  Delivery from Amazon is slow.  At times Amazon takes 4-5 days to ship.  Couple of orders by seller direct was faster.  Is prime worth it?
