Amazon Warns Sellers about Coronavirus

Amazon warned sellers about the coronavirus and its possible impact on their business operations. The warning came after Reuters (via Yahoo) published the article, "Lifeblood of Amazon merchants threatened as coronavirus infects Chinese workers" in which it wrote, "Amazon.com Inc sellers are bracing for product shortages as Chinese workers - worried about the fast-spreading coronavirus - may be unable or unwilling to return to idled factories."

Amazon posted the following message on the Amazon Seller Central portal on Friday evening:

Important notification regarding impacts of the Novel Coronavirus
We are aware that the Novel Coronavirus and related actions are impacting millions of individuals around the world.

If your business operations may be impacted, we recommend taking precautions to protect your Amazon seller account health. These precautions may include canceling previously placed orders that you are no longer able to fulfill, placing your account in vacation status, or taking additional steps to manage your inventory. You can learn more on relevant Help pages in Seller Central:

- Order cancellations
- Listing status for vacations, holidays, and other absences
- Update your listings from the Manage Inventory page

If your performance metrics have been impacted by this event, please include a brief description of how your business was impacted when you respond to the relevant performance notification in Seller Central. We will consider this unforeseen event when we evaluate your account's recent performance.

Sellers' reactions to the announcement varied. One applauded the move, another said not to expect much leeway from the company given its history of dealing with impacts from weather-related events. Another wondered if Amazon would offer leniency if sellers' operations were impacted by the flu.

Online sellers have been discussing the coronavirus outbreak as it spread, with some pondering about possible opportunities that shortages of masks at local retail stores might present them.

The LA Times said face-mask hoarding is already happening in Asian countries, though it noted, "Medical experts say it is more important to wash your hands than to wear a mask."

I thought the sellers who were concerned about the availability of masks were ARTISANS who use them in their crafting process?  (Discussion read in the Etsy Forums.)  Because washing your hands isn't a lot of help in preventing the inhalation of chemicals.

The significant issue here is that WORLDWIDE consumers might be facing shortages of ANYTHING currently manufactured in China.  From food products, to prescription drugs, to clothing and other wearables.  Furniture.  Like, nearly everything you see around you at home as you read this.

Well, yeah, toolguy.  Anything that disrupts the mass manufacture and transport of most consumer goods which are made in China is going to be a serious issue in the USA.  Not just for Amazon and eBay sellers (and the resellers on Etsy).  Almost all merchants, ecommerce or bricks-and-mortar, and almost all consumers, could be impacted to some degree.

Unfortunately, there is a lot that comes from china than most people think.  Weather it be complete assembled products, parts needed to build products here, raw materials, and yes pharmaceutical products. Why do you think that fentenal is coming from? Probably the same factory that produces for GSK or J&J. They dont care, as long as they make the $$.

One company I order from was supposed to be back from the new year last monday 3rd, will not be back till the 10th. But their factory wont reopen till the 24th instead of the 3rd. Now, will they have all their employee's back. Highly doubtful. They usually loose some even without a virus every year after the holiday.
I have a pretty decent stock but will probably run out of quite a few items.

I read about the pharmaceuticals thing some time ago. If I remember correctly, wasn't it a member of Congress who brought up the risk factor? When I read about that, my first thought is what idiots we have in Washington. They wouldn't let Russia do that, but they'll let China?

well I have plenty of stock - over 500,000 items - highly doubt I'll run out but ya never know. I hate to sound bitter but the Chinese have knocked off my product for years. Not that other people in the USA didn't do it before China but our overall dependency of foreign countries is not a good thing and this is a perfect example why.  Wait till the medicine starts running out and see how much the American pirates take advantage of that

This would effect eBay so much. They promote and are in cahoots with China.

USA really needs to get back to business of manufacturing and quality here in the USA.

Whatever - if 500K inventory you have dont need to brag about it. Why even comment on an issue that doesnt directly affect you ?

My dentist friend said their suppliers are limiting the amount of masks they can purchase. Think about hospitals as well. Stay healthy, don't panic. It makes things worse.

wilburnet - just saying - bring it on or not bring it at all - I've suffered thru the Chinese b/s for years now - paybacks a witch. Then on the the hand - I'm pretty sure my insulin comes from china.  Might be the kick in the behind I need to get off it.

FYI - wasn't bragging - actually bemoaning my lack of sales caused by penny foreign competition.  Would be nice to level the playing field for the US seller for once..
