Etsy Tinkers with Search to Serve Targeted Results

Be careful what you "search" for on Etsy:  the marketplace now uses your shopping behavior to personalize results the next time you search for an item.

Etsy CEO Josh Silverman told Wall Street analysts the company had launched its first-ever personalized search in the 3rd quarter (ending September 30). That means two different people will see two different search results for the same keyword based on their clicks, items they "favorite" or "add to cart," and their purchases, he said.

In a post on the Etsy Code as Craft blog, Lucia Yu gave a rundown of personalized search from the technical side (Yu is a Machine Learning Engineer at Etsy):

"Personalization enhances the underlying search model by customizing the ordering of relevant items according to user preference," she explained. "Using a combination of historical and contextual features, the search ranking model learns to recognize which items have a greater alignment with an individual's taste."

Yu used some examples of searches showing a screenshot of default search results and then personalized results. One example showed the default search results for the keyword "tray," showing trays made from a mix of materials, and then showed personalized results for a user who had recently interacted with leather goods - the results were trays made of leather.

Another showed the default search results for "print maxi dress," followed by personalized results for a user who recently interacted with African prints.

In a single search session, one could image that could be helpful. But as Etsy typecasts users, it could skew future search results in ways that the user may not want and may not be aware of. Holiday gift-giving is the perfect example - you might be buying a dress for your mom in a certain style as a holiday gift, but may not want to see results for African prints the rest of the year. (Or vice-versa - you may love African prints, but this time of year may be seeking a different style as a gift for a friend.)

Silverman told analysts the launch in Q3 was just the beginning - Etsy will apply personalization to discovery and browse soon, as well as to Etsy Ads.

Check out Yu's post on the Etsy blog for yourself and see what you think. Will personalization improve shoppers search experience and boost sales for sellers? Have you noticed a change in what you're seeing in search results?

God help us all....I wish they would stop with this AI BS and this way of thinking that they know what a buyer wants to purchase....these sites in their quest to be the best need to keep searches a little more simple, otherwise they are going to be chasing the buyers away that they hope to acquire....I guess most of them have never heard of KISS....

This should eliminate Etsy's need to take 12% from me every time.
Yes, EVERY TIME !
My stuff sells itself. Always has, always will.
I won't allow ANY SALES through Etsy until they CANCEL this "Success Penalty Fee".
So far I've cancelled a TON of sales.

And we thought eBay search was bad ?  This is beyond ridiculous. Surely it is a terrible disservice to sellers. I am glad I dropped my shop there. I DO continue to search for items, though, and this is really upsetting news.

I am wondering if using a VPN to do searches will help - I am certainly going to try it. My browser now uses a ''Facebook container'' option to prevent FB from tracking me as I shop - hoping maybe the VPN will prevent Etsy from that; if I do not log in I should be able to ''window shop'' privately, which is perfectly fine with me.

Egads!!  Why can't these sites just stop messing with the search engines and just give us results of what WE ask to see???

I've noticed I was not receiving as many results when researching items on Etsy. I logged into my second shop and the search results were completely different and more abundant from my main shop.

Usually I can't find what I am looking for through Etsy's search, I use Google to find the info I need quickly. Etsy feels a lot like Facebook these days.  They show you what they think is best repetitively and hide everything else they deem not as good or doesn't align with their views or style ect.

I am looking for an attorney who will help me with a case against Etsy.
Can anyone offer suggestions as to what type of attorney I should search for?
Thank you !
