eBay Turns to Sellers for Help with Catalog

By: Ina Steiner

eBay asked sellers for help in building a product catalog on Wednesday as it transitions to a Product Based Shopping Experience.

But with its launch of the "Product Experts Program" (PEP), eBay isn't looking for sellers to provide casual input - it's looking for sellers with "deep expertise" in 12 product areas and invited sellers to "pour your far-reaching product knowledge into eBay's catalog & in return have the opportunity to help shape the future of the category's structured data experience."

It's hard to imagine Amazon making such a request on its seller forums - presumably it has some system in place for collecting product data for its catalog and employs retail experts.

So it's unclear why eBay is relying on volunteers to help fix a major part of its Structured Data initiative, which has been Devin Wenig's clarion call since he took over as CEO of eBay 3 years ago this week. A couple of sellers wondered if the new program was related to eBay's recent layoffs.

When a seller asked how eBay would compensate sellers for their time, an eBay moderator responded, "I think our expert sellers time is far too valuable to be compensated by some token financial gifts" and said eBay was considering lots of incentives for sellers to participate in the program.

But sellers responding to eBay's invitation made it clear they were not looking for a "token financial gift" - they wanted to be compensated for they work eBay was inviting them to do on its behalf.

One seller noted: "What I've learned over the years is that none of these ideas translate into financial rewards for individuals willing to give their time for free. You have a job and you're getting paid. How do you see fairness or equality in me not having the same? I don't want a company's recognition, I want a check deposited into my bank account," and he said, "You and others get to keep your jobs and investors get more dividends and higher payouts."

The seller who originally asked how eBay would compensate sellers for their time in helping eBay build its catalog said they sold fulltime on multiple channels - "giving my knowledge and skills to eBay so others become better at selling the type of items I sell, for free, seems, well, counter productive."

One seller was more receptive to the idea, pointing out that some sellers would participate "simply to have the correct information on their listings  and to make sure "fakes" are easier to spot and avoid by the buyers and to be pulled by eBay."

Another seller said there was value in a seller adding their experience to the platform on which they sold.

Another seller responded, "No doubt all knowledge accrued will be funneled directly to China, right?"

That's not as far-fetched as it might sound. eBay has openly said it tells Chinese manufacturers what people are searching for on eBay.com and helps Chinese companies develop tools using Artificial Intelligence and Big Data.

eBay's invitation to sellers follows:

Calling All Product Experts!

Do you have deep expertise in any of these product areas?

Cardio Equipment
Cell Phones & Smartphones
Computers/Tablets, Networking Tablets & eBook Readers
Humidifiers
Internet & Media Streamers
Major Appliances
Portable Fans
 Programmable Thermostats
Small Kitchen Appliances
Space Heaters
TVs
Voice-Enabled Smart Assistants

Are you a frequent buyer & seller in one of the above categories?

Do people consult your opinion before buying those products?

Are you passionate about a community powered selling platform?

The Product Experts Program (PEP) invites you to pour your far-reaching product knowledge into ebay's catalog & in return have the opportunity to help shape the future of the category's structured data experience.

We invite you to apply to PEP & share a bit about your expertise.

A team member will get back to you with follow up questions & next steps if you're accepted into the program.

Product Experts accepted into the program will be asked to submit feedback on catalog products which will be immediately actioned by our team of agents. They will also gain access to a private discussion board where other experts & ebay employees will take & action the Expert's higher level category feedback.

We are eagerly awaiting your application!

The algorithms are an enormous problem.  Particularly in the hands of eBay.

Heres an ebay employee who just got canned, I think, saying some really devious stuff was going on. This stuff is getting really gross and they need to be investigated.

eBay abuses the very people who pay their wages..

I quit working for eBay after sitting in long executive meetings, where management basically plotted ways to farm more and more money from Sellers, without any actual knowledge or research to show why they where doing it. They would 'create' market research which they would release to the public, yet it was completely false and made up only to support their hypotheses - which normally included making it more and more difficult for the account holders (sellers) to actually, well, sell. Many of us often were left perplexed by what they were trying to do, none of it made sense - destroy the account holders with ridiculous policies and charge them more for doing so? It literally gobsmacked me. That along with the fraud was the last straw for me, they used to a good, fun business, since the last five years, the new CEO's, havung never sold on eBay have single handedly destroyed it. I fear, that it was intentional, to basically short the stock. Who knows.

I've been saying for more than 10 years that ebafia's alleged 'market research' was non existent and that they made up whatever suited their purposes at the time.

I've called them several times and demanded to see this 'market research,' who did the research, and the actual numbers or responses actually were.

I've  been denied each and every time with ebafia claiming that this non existent 'market research' was confidential and proprietary.

Liars and thieves all.

I had a relative that worked there and what she was telling me was the main reason I quit the site. I am really glad I did, too. A lot of it was so hard to even believe, but it turned out to be true. I never would have seen a lot of this coming 4-8 years ago. I would have believed "nobody would do that to their own company or the customer". Most of this started in 05-06. And there is MORE to come.

None of my collectibles and military surplus items will ever be in their pathetic catalog, but I would not volunteer to help in any case.
If they make search any worse than it already is, I may just have to abandon my anchor store for eCrater, on which my sales, while far less than eBay, have been steadily increasing.

They have giant, enormous bloody balls, to expect Sellers to "assist" them in any of their "bright ideas"!!!!!  Nothing works as it should for many, many months now. Example. bulk editor wont' save changes to templates and missing images have to be replaced by Sellers as per my last service tag. Initially CS told me eta of fi 07/13/18 and since I had a service tag, I would be notified of the fix...NOT.  Was also tole when the fix did happen all my pictures would be replaced on active listings and on my templates.  Now they say they lost my photos and I will have to put them back in manually!!  1300+ templates all need editing and no bulk editor to help me, BUT yet they want Sellers to help them...?????? No, HELL NO!!

I volunteered to help eBay for many years; never once did they call and ask for help in the camera marketplace of which I was a top salesman for the last 50+ years! it wouldn't matter anyway, the problem has been the eBay JUNK search system! You cannot search Title, Category, & description and not get back 47% failure rate! The search system has to be required too be "Manufacturer and Model", that is all! As for the current product system it's a failure! Most of been written by a huge store on eBay who pushed the latest and didn't want the rest of older inventory photographic equipment  to show up! eBay got scammed and didn't even realize it! Betrayed by their own consultants!

What in the world are they smoking?  Catalog, indeed!  Silly boys haven't much of a clue about what they are doing!  You ARE NOT Amazon. Stop trying to be and GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS, where you made money.

Ebay is just doing exactly what Amazon asks.  They ask you to answer questions about products and rely on consumers and sellers alike to correct listing errors on their products.  Same for UPC abuse on Amazon.  At least eBay doesn't compete directly (yet).
