Amazon Customers Vent Online over Account Closures

The internet is filling up with reports that Amazon has closed accounts of customers. Initially we were cautious given that today is April Fool's Day and the fact that Amazon has been in the spotlight due to attention from the President of the United States of America.

The reports began a few days ago and are found on Reddit, Down Detector, Facebook, and Twitter (hashtag #AmazonClosed).

Reddit user reported the following issue 3 days ago, with other users reporting similar issues:

"Woke up and couldn't log in. Said my email address didn't exist. Could still use the app on my phone. Called and they said account was closed, but no reason or who or why. Must be a glitch as I see a lot of posts stating the same thing. On the phone now and he's submitting a form to reopen it."

On Friday, a customer created a group on Facebook called the Amazon Account Closure Discussion Group. By Sunday evening, there were 1,333 members.

We reached out to Amazon this evening, and a spokesperson provide us with the following statement: "Customer trust is one of Amazon's top priorities. To protect that trust, we take a number of actions, including closing accounts that have violated our policies. If a customer has a question about their account, we recommend they contact Customer Service so we can investigate and take appropriate action."

Indications are that Amazon believes bad actors may be behind the social media campaign and its systems are secure.

We found no reports of such problems on the Amazon seller boards. As an Amazon customer, have you experienced an unexpected account closure? As an Amazon seller, what do you think?

My account was closed on March 28th without warning or notice. No e-mail notification or anything - just wouldn't let me login saying my account didn't exist anymore.

Amazon's Customer Service response was to fill out some form on my behalf asking my account to be re-opened.

48 hours later I received the following e-mail:
"Hello,

We have checked all the transactions and activities in your account , but found no security issue or any unauthorized access in this account.

I'd like to inform , Amazon takes all security-related matters very seriously and your account security is our top priority. We have policies and security measures in place to ensure that your personal information remains secure.

If you have concerns regarding your account security, the best action you can take is to choose a strong password for your account. For more information please review the following Help page:

hope to see you again soon.

OK - Great, no unauthorized access issues but yet my account was still closed without any explanation. Repeated calls to Customer Service gave me various different excuses. Violated policy, that I requested my own account to be closed, once closed it's unable to be reopened, etc. No one could give me a clear answer as to why or how my account was closed.

Finally on Saturday, March 30th, I received the following e-mail:
"Hello,

I'm very sorry for any inconvenience this accidental account closure may have caused, and have reopened your account. I've also requested a password reset on your behalf. You should receive an e-mail from us with a link and instructions for resetting your password.

If you still have any problems in accessing your account, please call our Customer Service department that can help you change your password. Simply click the Contact Us button on the right side of any Help page:

You should now be able to sign into your account as normal; however, we're unable to reactivate the payment methods and shipping addresses you had listed. To add this information you can either enter it during checkout, or you can add the information by going to "Your Account" (www.amazon.com/your-account).

We hope to see you again soon.

We'd appreciate your feedback. Please use the buttons below to vote about your experience today.

Best regards,

I too woke up to no account. It said it was closed. Then during the day, I was sent emails that my Showtime and Starz have been canceled, I can't access my Prime, then I had an email saying my Amazon music has been canceled. I am a buyer not a seller. I chatted with tech support she said she filled out a form and I will hear back in a few days. I can't believe this crap.
