How Much Do You Tip Your Postal Carrier?

By: Ina Steiner

It's customary to give tips to service providers around the holidays - hairdressers, cleaning services, newspaper delivery people. An obvious recipient for online sellers is their postal carrier or USPS window clerk (depending on if they have pick-up or if they drop off their packages).

On Christmas Day, we were discussing with family how much to tip their postal carriers for Christmas, if at all. And are you showing appreciation for their hard work, or is it a mechanism to help ensure good service in the future?

Interestingly the Postal Service has rules about how much you can tip employees.

Employee Tipping and Gift-Receiving Policy
All postal employees, including carriers, must comply with the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch. Under these federal regulations, carriers are permitted to accept a gift worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion, such as Christmas. However, cash and cash equivalents, such as checks or gift cards that can be exchanged for cash, must never be accepted in any amount. Furthermore, no employee may accept more than $50 worth of gifts from any one customer in any one calendar year period.

What about other shipping carriers - should you tip UPS and FedEx drivers, for example? And are there others you should be sure to tip to show your appreciation?

As an online seller, how do you approach tipping around the holidays?

Tip? It's a trick question right? Not sure what your post office is like but in Vegas it's just like going to the DMV - they shuffle around like their on vacation. My mailman? At the store I rarely see him - he dumps my mail off at the 7-11 next door - sometimes I get it sometimes not. Some times the bills get paid some times I have to pay the late fee because I never got the bills.  At home - he won't get out of his truck when there's a package - just puts the slip in the mailbox wether or not I'm home - he doesn't care - so I always have to drive to the po to get it.  And pick up my packages at home? Nifty idea - too bad he won't scan my packages in - bet the PMG doesn't realize none of them do it. That's why they have to keep running that tv commercial telling people to use that service.  We're not dummies - if they did their job correctly we'd all be doing it.  Tip? I think not.  wish I had 1/2 their benefits
