How Much Do You Tip Your Postal Carrier?

By: Ina Steiner

It's customary to give tips to service providers around the holidays - hairdressers, cleaning services, newspaper delivery people. An obvious recipient for online sellers is their postal carrier or USPS window clerk (depending on if they have pick-up or if they drop off their packages).

On Christmas Day, we were discussing with family how much to tip their postal carriers for Christmas, if at all. And are you showing appreciation for their hard work, or is it a mechanism to help ensure good service in the future?

Interestingly the Postal Service has rules about how much you can tip employees.

Employee Tipping and Gift-Receiving Policy
All postal employees, including carriers, must comply with the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch. Under these federal regulations, carriers are permitted to accept a gift worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion, such as Christmas. However, cash and cash equivalents, such as checks or gift cards that can be exchanged for cash, must never be accepted in any amount. Furthermore, no employee may accept more than $50 worth of gifts from any one customer in any one calendar year period.

What about other shipping carriers - should you tip UPS and FedEx drivers, for example? And are there others you should be sure to tip to show your appreciation?

As an online seller, how do you approach tipping around the holidays?

Problem number one for me would be to try to figure out just WHICH CARRIER to tip.  They have ALL been friendly and professional, but throughout 2014 we had at least FIVE different letter carriers.  As to UPS the only interaction I had with ANY of their drivers was about 6 weeks ago when I answered the door quickly enough to catch him that the boxes he left on OUR porch was really for our next door neighbors. ** that mix up was entirely TOO easy for anyone to make as we are on a cul-de-sac such that the driveways are CloseTogether where they meet the circle. **

Those guys have regular pay, health insurance and job security, 3 basic things that ebay sellers are now generally lacking.

(Maybe they should tip us).

MH
Should I tip my super-rude postmaster or the mailman who gets coffee on my mail, tough choice.

Never. They make enough money delivering my mail to the next street.

They days of tipping public sector employees such as trash collectors and postal workers are gone

Public sector employees as every analysis shows have much better pay and working conditions then private sector persons,

I have a friend who works for the NYC dept of sanitation who makes 86k per year

The idea of tipping people who are being paid with taxes that are breaking my back is insane

Long After I have fled state for one with sane taxation these persons will be collecting a generous pension I helped pay for.. That's my tip

Nothing, most postal people I know, carriers, clerks that have been there for some time make $26 to $50 I have heard from some over the recent year $26 to $50 an hour for the real long time senior workers, they make enough !

NOTHING!

They have great pay, benefits and probably will always be guaranteed a pension. And those that get Pension when they are caught dumping people's mail.
Why tip anyone that our taxpayer's dollars are going to.

I do clean homes and I do not expect and Christmas tips. I am independent and I think I make enough.

You have to realize the the Postal Service does not receive ONE DIME of taxpayer funds (except a small subsidy for mail for the blind and handicapped).  It is an INDEPENDENT government agency expected to act like a BUSINESS.  Many postal service employees are part-timers and probationary employees who work 7 days a week and receive very little in the way of benefits.  I don't know why people like to assume things about career fields they know nothing about.  And I don't know why people attack the middle class instead of criticize the 1% who tries to divide and conquer all those below them.

By the way, there is no postal worker that makes anywhere near 50 dollars an hour…. where are you getting this information?  You do realize that city carriers start at 15 dollars an hour and work 7 days a week?

I didn't give anything this year.

For many years I had the same carrier for my house, and every year I would give him a box of See's Candy. Then he got injured, and we've had rotating carriers ever since, and I've only actually seen the carriers a handful of times over the last several years. I don't get that many packages delivered by UPS and FedEx, so I wouldn't consider giving those drivers anything.

Last year I handed out candy to all the clerks at my post office, and they all seemed annoyed that they were "forced" to accept the gifts. So nothing for them this year.

%50 every year--my mailman has never lost or mis-delivered a package. God help everyone on the street when he  is out. He delivers a couple hundred small packages to me a year.

Although the regular USPS guy never brings my mail as the subs do, instead opting to leave it 6 blocks away in a lock box, he always has two bones in hand to greet my Dog which makes his day and has for years. To me that's worth a Million  but in this day & age of JD & Co., I ain't got no Honey, no Money, no Nuttin' so I give him $20 at Christmas and bags of Dog Bones when I think of it because I'd have to assume my Dog isn't the only one on his route who eagerly awaits the sound of his truck.

As an aside, he told me pick-ups and deliveries were way down this year, all due to eBay aka JD & Co.

We USED to have a regular delivery person.

Now it seems to be a free-for-all - a different driver every time I look.

ALSO - we are in one of the areas that had Sunday and multiple deliverys during the day.  At times it sounded like a racetrack on our residential street - with all the delivery trucks, USPS,  and some unmarked vans doing deliveries.

USPS were out sometime around 6am delivering, and again later in the day.

I've never seen anything like it.

I guess everyone was avoiding the malls and shopping online.  We did, that's for sure!

Nothing. She's rude.  If you ask her to take a package for you she acts as if you are asking for one of her kidneys. She will not even make eye contact with you unless she is forced to.

I'm surprised at the hostility towards the postal carriers / clerks....I think most of that should be directed at their superiors and postmaster. As in all fields there are friendly and annoying people, but in general I think they do a pretty good job.
My po recently changed their hours to opening at 10 instead of 9, this is normally a 4 person post office, well, due to transfers, retirements, there were only 2, the postmaster didn't send any replacements. These two girls were abused daily, ''wow I wish I had these hours, sleeping in, coming in at 10'' (btw they get there at 8 they have to do po boxes, and they didn't set the hours) ''look only 2 working'' (it's not their fault) and the favorite ''I pay your salary''
Several of us regular customers went to see the postmaster to assign more clerks to that PO, well, guess what, he wouldn't show his face.
I know these girls scan all my packages with a smile on their face every day. I'm grateful.
I don't think they want anything of value, but a thank you and some cookies is appreciated.

My Grandfather was a clean shaven uniformed Postal Carrier. His tips were stashed in his hat.
Today, the postal "carriers" don't wear the Postal Hat, they use trucks, look like slobs, and throw the packages.
NO TIP FOR THEM.

I'll have to consult with uncle Griff on this one...he knows they like donuts so maybe a gift card to krispy kreme or dunkin donuts will suffice?
