Etsy to Post Users' Real Names in Discussion Forums

By: Ina Steiner

Etsy plans to add users' real names to the forums for those users who shared their real names in their public profiles. The disclosure came in a discussion about privacy issues ("An Important Privacy Question for Etsy - Opt-IN VS Opt-OUT").

Etsy founder and CEO Rob Kalin said the company would display public information in all areas of the site. "For example, we'll be adding real names to the forums, for people who have their real names on their profile."

The decision is surprising, since many users on industry discussion boards are careful to hide their identity through special "posting IDs" to prevent other participants from wreaking havoc on their product listings should they disagree with their opinions.

Etsy spokesperson Christina Batch-Lee said today there was not a lot more to share at this time, and according to Kalin, the reasoning behind the decision could be found in the forum post. "There is no date attached to the project at this point," she said.

The original thread was started by a user on Thursday evening who was asking about Etsy's privacy policy, which has come under fire of late due to new policies and features aimed at making the site more social.

"Will Etsy make the default settings for all privacy related information and features "OPT-IN" ? If not, why?" the user asked.

Kalin and another administrator participated in the discussion thread on Friday. At the time of this blog post (Tuesday evening), the thread was 24 pages, and neither Kalin nor moderators had returned to the thread to answer followup questions.

Under the name section on the registration it should state that your name will be listed to the public.

Users that have already listed it should be allowed to remove it before the new rule is made standard.

It's time for some of you to stop hiding behind your fake identities. You probably don't pay taxes either. If you sell items then there should be no reason why you would not want people to know your name. Again if you have the option to opt out ahead of time then there should be no problem.

Some of you people are ridiculous and complain about everything. In the real world it's called the cost of doing business.

They have my details but there is no way I would sign up at Etsy to buy or sell now.

They hold onto all information even if you close your account.

Since all personal names of accounts were 'accidentally' revealed on the treasuries I have no confidence in Etsy regarding any privacy of information they have.

The taste test is yet another way of profiling the members and gathering more information.

Wish I had never heard of them.

If its not too late for you do not go there.

We've been trying to knock some common sense into Rokali's head for over a year now. All of the thousands of forum postings have not made one iota of difference to him regarding privacy invasion and etsy's failure to properly notify ALL members that they're automatically opted IN to have their names exposed.

The sellers who have been sickened by the steady decline of sales caused his creepy ideas and endless changes have opened shops on other venues in an attempt to rebuild their businesses. Many keep a token etsy shop open while they attempt to keep up a concerned presence in the forums but the mutings and abrupt shop closures continue. I applaud this site for allowing us to be heard.

Hi Pink Cucumber, I had been following your thread, since :) I no longer have permission to post.

I have begun to notice that the staff doesn't even bother with explanations anymore, just shutters.

To see Kalin's lack of respect in action, everyone should go read the now shut down thread to see for yourselves how completely oblivious he is to anything that anyone says, ... Well, other than the lessoning kumbayah chanting of the cupcake brigade.

Oh and the Taste Test stupidity is only drawing from a very narrow pool of sellers, so instead of the gift guides that had to be clicked, the site is now shoving Brooklyn Hipster Chic down the throats of any poor soul who happens to stumble across the front page. They are also recording something while wandering through the unsuspecting person through the test.

Sellers were advised to do the test while logged out. I did so, a few times. When I logged in, well low and bhold there were results pinned to my ID, and from an anonomous test.

Privacy concerns, much?

I surely won't be attending any of their discussion groups or teams or whatever they're calling them this week.  Whatever happened to being the best site for handmade things to buy and sell on the internet?  Now, all of a sudden this jerk wants to compete with Facebook....fool!  that's already been done!

I had only started to read that when it got slammed locked because it obviously wasn't going too well for Rokali. No surprise there then.

As a (one time) business site for selling one would expect people to be using their business/trading names not their real name with a tiny shop name under it throughout the site.

That was when Etsy WAS a selling venue though, now its turning into some sort of pathetic ''social site'' I'm not so sure what is appropriate.

It is in no way a matter of ''trust'' as the CEO keeps suggesting. People everywhere KNOW me as BLUE KITTY who makes miniatures, if I used my given name you wouldn't know me from Adam.

I am Blue Kitty in specialist groups and forums, Flickr, my blog, my Etsy shop and now my new alternative shops that I view as my life boats in case the Etsy ship starts to sink.

Probably dating myself here but there is an old saying "do not mix business with pleasure". Obviously this was stated way before internet social networking but there still is something to learn from that statement. There is a difference from being friendly in business and doing business with friends. I do trust my friends though far more than having my personal information on a site such as Etsy. At least with Facebook and myspace you know what you are getting or giving when logging on.

The amount of snark by etsy admin in the etsy forums today and the number of admin closing of threads today is quite unprescidented...

I don't get the whole ''shopping is a social activity'' mindset. I'm not freaking 12 years old anymore and I don't give a rat's backside what my friends are shopping for. Goofs like Kalin are attempting to be trendy, but I don't seriously think it translates into real money for online sellers. Remember eBay's ''My World'' feature? What a joke!

This mental giant obviously didn't take the time to learn that Facebook told us we could nail down our own names.  It was completely opt in!  At no time did they simply use our real names because they happened to be on our account.

This whole social shopping thing is getting rediculous. What next?, are they going to suspend your buying privilages until you socialize more?.

And Etsy c'mon, whats next a direct link to the users credit report?

Get real...are you named after your mommy or daddy? O wait...I get it now.

For a period of time, newbies couldn't complete the registration without putting something in the name boxes, and there was no opt out pop up. I know because I registered at that time and was not happy about it. Only after a good old fashioned uproar did Etsy make it possible to remove our names from our profile, taking us out of the stupid people search it was pushing. And then after some bad press, they put the half hearted pop up on the registration page.

The worst problem isn't for the sellers-- who have had time to cuss sweat and sqear their way through whatever privacy opt OUTs they've needed to do-- but for the buyers, who might only have signed in once a year ago and have no idea that their email addresses are now searchable.
