eBay Discontinues AdCommerce Ad Program for Sellers

By: Ina Steiner

eBay sellers will no longer be able to purchase ads to promote their listings. eBay announced today it is discontinuing the AdCommerce pay-per-click advertising program in the U.S. and Canada effective August 4. eBay had also recently terminated its Featured First advertising program that allows Top Rated sellers to pay for top placement in search results.

The AdCommerce program was similar to eBay's version of Google Adwords and Amazon Product Ads, allowing advertisers to buy ads that appear on the eBay marketplace. There were more than 5.5 billion views of AdCommerce ads served on eBay Inc. weekly, according to the company in May.

In a letter sent to sellers who were registered for the program, eBay said, "We understand that these AdCommerce ads may have provided an advantage to your business. At the same time we are confident that consistently displaying the most relevant items is in the best interest of buyers, sellers and the eBay marketplace."

Sellers will not be required to take any action, and their AdCommerce ads will automatically expire on August 4;  final billing will be sent out in early September. The service will continue for eBay sellers using AdCommerce in Europe and Australia.

Hey, I am just pointing out how stupid it is--no need to attack me --just thought I would share some info that hasn't been shared yet on the boards. I don't feel "chosen", I feel cut off at the knees!

He said the site wouldn't be recognizable when his plan was implemented.

I think it will be an ad site only. An ad search site only.
Just like google but instead of information being the commodity as it is on google, it will be a product search with ebay getting a cut of the sale price through paypal and a fee for advertising.

It's the perfect combination of Amazon and google. They will probably work out a way to direct the buyer to a paypal shopping cart if the buyer used their search.

If it works it will be good for them. If another pay service knocks out paypal and people don't use the EBAY SEARCH for products it will fail.

They have made  enemies of millions of sellers who might want to bypass ebay when looking for products.
It will be interesting to see.

One more thing. Ebay is recklessly IMO divorcing itself from all sellers big and small and finally will be what they always pretended to be "just a venue"

When does the level of control that ebay imposes on sellers cross the line from simply providing a venue to sell to dictating so much about selling that they cross the line from a facilitator of the sellers auctions for their goods to a de facto employer?

Ebay built its success by providing a simple venue for the seller to offer their wares with the policies and procedures that worked best for them. In tweaking the presentation, pricing, and policies therin, the seller would either prosper or fail and it was that simple. This was no different that a mall making money by charging rent to the stores inside, some do great and otehrs are out of business. But what if a mall started dictating what the stores could sell, how they could sell it, and for how much? What if that mall forced resolutions of customer complaints based on the malls rules over the stores free will and if the mall changed the rent and the mall hours every month? Would that store really still be in business for itself?.... or simply an insturment of the mall allowed to sell what ever widgit it happened to offer?

When we signed our user agreement, it was under the set of conditions that existed then and they have changed all the rules after the fact. We all know how ebay's imposing the  DSR,chargeback, shipping restriction, and myriad of other rules have impacted our sales and COST US MONEY and that is the point, if you or I sell something to a buyer and they dont get what they dont get 100% of what they paid for they get 100% of their money back. Ebay is not giving us what we paid for. They took control of our stores, drove the venue into the ground and killed the traffic on the site and they should be held accountable for the mess they have made just like BP is accountable to the fishermen whos livleyhoods that they destroyed with the mess they made.

Isnt it time that ebay foots the bill for the sellers that they are running out of business? How about putting ebay on the hook for the unemployment benefits for sellers they restrict or suspend without a fair forum for both sides to be heard. When a company benefits from the actions of a person acting in their interests and at their direction, they are responsable under labor laws and I submit that they have crossed the line and are now acting in effect as employers. What do you think?

That's what they are afraid of. Thats why I believe they are going to be a paid ad site only. They said they will allow people to place ads on their site directly pointing to individuals  own site only. They want no responsibility anymore. They will only be an ad veneue.
I expect to get another email saying thank you for your past business however we are only allowing businesses to place url  links to their own sites.

Small sellers will not be able to afford the cost of these links, Again I suspect ebay will only be an ad venue. No risks to them.
Its craigslist and google  rolled into one  with certain amazon qualities.

We small sellers will soon be terminated.

"There seems to have been a big adcommerce push just before the cancellation. It seems like they wanted to get their adcommwerce stats up for some nefarious reason? "

Yes, end of the quarter to inflate quarterly earnings report a bit.

AdCommerce push did one or both of two things. (1) It tried to inflate the quarter's numbers with the big sales push. (2) It may have been a deadline to prove it could meet a target, as in "if you don't have x met by the end of June, we're calling it quits."  In both cases, the program was being strongly sold right up to the shut-off point.  I think it didn't produce the mone eBay wanted, so it's done.  If it made 2Q10 look good on the way out, so much the better.

Pathetic... Jerking people around with paid advertising. If a seller is .02% from TSR they are 'awful' in search. EBay's 'power' is to instill fear. If people suspect, feel afraid, act out of fear, they become easily controlled. This path of sudden crazy changes, TSR badges, constant inconsistencies, discounts all results in anxiety. That is the plan I think. Power, money, pawns.  Pathetic.

i've always thought that an add that looked exactly like a search result was a bad idea.  several times i've clicked on them by mistake, never have i been taken anyplace i wanted to go.

as far as ebay breaking their promise about seller changes.  i am NOT surprised.

After 8/4/10 when all pay per click ads will be from non ebay members, I think everyone should click on a number of them per day. Click around the advertisers site a bit and then come back to ebay.

If enough people did this, it might have a positive effect on ebay's site.

I was one of those eBay Sellers who was shocked at the announcement.  I told them in a letter that this is another example of eBay shooting itself in the foot.  Of course they didn't answer my letter or my other comments.  What a bunch of As*es !
I liked the program and I felt that it was working for me.
My only recourse was to shut down immediately so I wouldn't be sending any more money their way and not wait for them to shut me down on August 4th.
I would encourage any other advertisers to shut down right now also.

US Listings have Ad Commerce links to HONG KONG sellers on every search page!

# items found from international sellers:

Ad Commerce is now all China showing on USA listings.  Ebay eliminated all the US sellers from Ad Commerce, and the bottom of the page space has not 'ended' on the US and Ca. listings, HONG KONG gets the space on US listings!

Your page hits are now going to China/HongKong sellers.  Ebay has no interest in the US sellers, or the US Dollar.

''As we announced last month, in order to focus on the best selling and shopping experience, the AdCommerce program that allowed eBay sellers to purchase pay-per-click advertisements on search result pages linking to their eBay stores and listings will be retired for eBay.com and eBay.ca as of today, Aug. 4, 2010.

The service will continue for eBay sellers using AdCommerce in Europe and Australia.''

HONG KONG SELLER ADS GET STAMPED ON EVERY SEARCH PAGE IN THE US BY THE NEW AD COMMERCE!!!!

@E. Volve and Others

Anyone still out there who still believes ebay isn't anti-American and anti-Canadian?

John Donahoe continues to exterminate more American sellers.

Use all forms of social media to spread ebay's lie to cover up their blatant facilitation of giving unfair exposure and  advantages to Communist Chinese sellers at the expense of American and Canadian sellers.

Geee, are these people on purple microdot? eBay as turned into a search engine.  You are better off buy pay per click on the major search engines.  I quit selling and buying about 3 years ago.  eBay was the worst!  Can anybody say AOL?
