eBay Discontinues AdCommerce Ad Program for Sellers

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay sellers will no longer be able to purchase ads to promote their listings. eBay announced today it is discontinuing the AdCommerce pay-per-click advertising program in the U.S. and Canada effective August 4. eBay had also recently terminated its Featured First advertising program that allows Top Rated sellers to pay for top placement in search results.

The AdCommerce program was similar to eBay's version of Google Adwords and Amazon Product Ads, allowing advertisers to buy ads that appear on the eBay marketplace. There were more than 5.5 billion views of AdCommerce ads served on eBay Inc. weekly, according to the company in May.

In a letter sent to sellers who were registered for the program, eBay said, "We understand that these AdCommerce ads may have provided an advantage to your business. At the same time we are confident that consistently displaying the most relevant items is in the best interest of buyers, sellers and the eBay marketplace."

Sellers will not be required to take any action, and their AdCommerce ads will automatically expire on August 4;  final billing will be sent out in early September. The service will continue for eBay sellers using AdCommerce in Europe and Australia.

They start and they stop. They tweak, and untweak. The Ebay marketplace was once intended for the average mom and pop and now they are luring the big dogs in by giving special privileges and pricing to million item catalogers.

The Ebay niche has been completely dismantled and destroyed.

Your best best is your own shopping cart website with your own marketing. Ebay couldn't stand on it's own feet, they need Paypal to make them whole.

Break up Ebay and Paypal!

"Pay Pal IRS thing coming soon."

It very well could be that.

I was very disappointed when I got an email from facebook telling me that they have partnered wuith PayPal!

"In February, Facebook announced a strategic relationship with PayPal that would allow advertisers to use PayPal to pay for their Facebook Ads.

This is now available and PayPal support is here! In addition to the different credit cards accepted, PayPal is now listed as another option for payment when creating an ad. You can also add PayPal as a funding source if you’re already advertising by logging in to Funding Sources from your Ads Manager.

There seems to have been a big adcommerce push just before the cancellation. It seems like they wanted to get their adcommwerce stats up for some nefarious reason?

''The Ebay marketplace was once intended for the average mom and pop and now they are luring the big dogs in by giving special privileges and pricing to million item catalogers''

The irony of the current situation is so compelling it would make for a great movie.
It has it all, big business usurping the efforts of it's underlings by every possible way and mean, at the expense of the very force that created it. Hey, there's even politics now!. Is anybody listening?

This is what the ivory tower fears the most, in all likelihood.

It sounds like ebay was hardselling AC to generate a bunch of dough before they kicked the sellers they were hard selling to to the curb. It sort of like convincing someone to jump out of a sink ship into a lifeboat but not tell them the lifeboat has a hole in it and it will sink as soon as you step into it.

This is typical of the backwards thinking at ebay.

They get rid of the ads that ebay sellers pay for that drive traffic to their ebay store but keep the links the non-ebay sellers use to sell at their non-ebay site on the ebay site.

How can these fools not see this?

I had a feeling this was going to happen. On one of my user ID's ads mysteriously stopped showing up in search results. I figured this was a test

Also on the beta of the next generation search, there are no sponsored links.

Also on the adcommerce blog they stopped promoting eBay on location, so that told me that management was no longer committed to this program.

Before the program started to suck in June, I was getting 600 clicks a day. It was a great way to get exposure to your eBay listings.

Actually, Adcommerce was not a great idea. You had to pay extra to try to make up for some of eBay's search deficiencies, which Adcommerce only exacerbated by sticking sponsored links above the page numbers smack in the middle of the search results.

If eBay really gets rid of it, it would be a positive step. You don't see Google sticking sponsored listings in the middle of search results.

But it's a measure of the low trust everybody has for eBay, that even though they just announced they are getting rid of AdCommerce, nobody belies they will actually do it. Everybody has been trained to expect them to give the space over to Diamond Seller ads. TWT

I've recently seen ''Worst Ever'' bumper stickers referring to President Obama.

Can we get some ''Worst CEO Ever'' stickers made up for JD?  Can we list them for sale on Ebay?  ;)

@ cuckoo,

No, that’s the whole problem, they don’t know from day to day what they are doing. Every morning the headless turkeys meet in the executive conference room and then they proceed to run around in circles, bumping into each other, trying to think of some new idiotic idea that will save them from becoming the focus of Thanksgiving …

Once again, eBay breaks another promise to sellers.

eBay promised that major changes would be limited to twice a year.

Then eBay decided that twice a year was insufficient to keep sellers sufficiently off balance, so they changed it to three times a year.

It would appear that this is a major change to sellers that utilize the program, and it is occurring out of cycle.

How much do we want to bet that a new program similar to the discontinued AdCommerce program will be rolled out for participation by Diamonds only.

With this announcement, eBay proves yet again they are out to exterminate small sellers.

Being a small seller on eBay is like trying to build a brick house on quick sand.

How does it feel to work for a corporation again?  How many sellers left a corporate job and sold online to be corporate free?  Hows that power seller job security working out for you now that you're invested 1/2 way through the year?  So much for only 2 changes per year!

Tomorrow they could announce the end to Best Match, and revive Time Ending Soonest; but somehow I doubt it.  Ebay treats you like they hate you after you made them?  Ebay doesn't own your inventory or talent.  There's a market for everything.

I'd further suggest many of us contact litigation attorneys when our sales fail from this slaughter because this extra announcement is clearly fraud upon ebay members.  Only 2 per year?  Ya

@QUESTION you asked  "What Paypal IRS thing???"

It is my understanding, sometime this fall, or before end of year, Pay Pal/eBay will be contacting us sellers who sell more than $20,000 worth of stuff or 200 transactions per year.

They will want out Social Security # or EIN so they can report at the end of 2011 what are total Pay Pal payments were for the entire year of 2011 on a 1099 form to the IRS

That is so the IRS can keep a better tab on online sellers, to see if their Gross Sales on the Federal Income Tax return match up with the 1099 form Pay Pal/eBay sends them for total payments received.

Now keep in mind, if you get a sale on eBay that is $520 then $40 shipping for a total payment of $560 what gets reported to the IRS is the $560 amount you got in payment through Pay Pal

Now you pay taxes on what you net, so if your like most sellers who have low profit margin you may have paid $400 your cost before selling for the item, $35 Shipping, $36 eBay fee, $17 Pay Pal
leaves you $72 Net Profit, THAT is what you pay taxes on, BUT the $560 is what gets reported to IRS......

SO SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS OF COSTS OF GOODS, EBAY, PAY PAL FEES, AND SHIPPING FEES IN CASE OF AUDIT !

"The AdCommerce program was similar to eBay's version of Google Adwords" ... Hmmmm....eBay wants to follow Google's relevancy, but hasn't done it yet. I wonder when eBay will dump Best Match, which isn't best at all. One way I get good deals on eBay is by removing the best match. I use three strategies:

1. I use eBay's ENDING SOONEST (instead of Best Match) to catch deals that others missed because items were listed at awkward times (the best time to list is Sunday night 6-7 p.m. PST, the best time to buy is midnight 6 a.m PST) or the wrong category.
2. I use eBay's NEWLY LISTED (instead of Best Match) to catch great deals on Vintage BUY NOWS. Sometimes sellers make mistakes or don't know what they have, so I'm first to snag the collectibles I want.

3. I use eBay's PRICE + SHIPPING LOWEST FIRST (instead of Best Match) to find AUCTIONS & BUY NOWS that are not collectibles, like books.
