eBay to Demote Sellers in Search Results for Poor Grades

By: Ina Steiner

eBay sellers will be required to meet stricter performance standards when Seller Release 1 (version 2010) rolls out on April 1st. If sellers don't meet the new standards, eBay will demote their listings in search and may limit their selling activity. In addition to low DSR scores, eBay will be watching Neutral feedback ratings as well.

Some readers aren't sure of the exact sanctions for under-performing sellers. A reader who signed her email, "Anxious Power Seller," wrote:

I am writing to you in hopes of getting some information regarding EBAY's new seller performance requirements. As a power seller with only 1 negative (12 mos) but frequent unexplained low DSR ratings, I am concerned with failing to meet EBAY's new seller requirements. To be specific; I would like to know what exact actions EBAY will take against sellers that fail to meet the new standards?? I do not see this information posted anywhere on EBAY and I have tried to ask EBAY's customer service reps on more than one occasion but the answers given were lacking in specifics.

According to the Seller Performance Standards page, "If you don't meet the minimum performance standards, your search placement will be lowered and there may be limits to your selling activity until your ratings improve. You may also be restricted from selling items on eBay if your performance falls significantly below the minimum requirements."

The following chart compares the current and future standards:

eBay will only count 1s and 2s if they come from two or more buyers within any given evaluation period. If sellers have more than 400 transactions, three or more buyers must leave low detailed seller ratings before they are counted.

In addition to meeting the standards for low DSRs, eBay will also be looking at:
  • Cases for items not received or items not as described
  • Negative Feedback received
  • Neutral Feedback received
Other things sellers should keep in mind: Sellers must meet the new requirements of a seller performance rating "Above Standard" in order to have a Premium or Anchor Stores subscription.

And there are new PowerSeller requirements: The new PowerSeller requirements (originally announced in July 2009) will be in effect for all PowerSellers, not just Top-rated sellers. With the new PowerSeller discount schedule (also announced in July), only eBay Top-rated sellers will receive 20% fee discounts. All other PowerSellers will receive 5% discounts. PowerSellers will see this change reflected on their statements starting May 1, 2010.

While much attention was paid to the new fee structure when eBay announced its March changes, the above changes are also significant. The anonymous nature of the DSR system leaves good sellers vulnerable to unwarranted negative feedback from retaliatory buyers, competitors, and unstable or "recreational" bad buyers.

If you have questions about the seller performance standards and sanctions, please leave them in the comments.

Sellers Demote eBay for Poor Performance

Imagine that headline; and imagine a world where eBay was remunerated by its sellers based on its performance.

Let's see if eBay will allow a public rating system for its own performance.

And if eBay's own DSRs fall below the wildly unrealistic 99.95% it expects of its sellers; no, let's be generous to poor old eBay, 99.5%, then NO Fees Would Be Payable by Sellers.

I suspect eBay would currently be scoring DSLs of around 65%, or less from its disenfranchised, tired and angry seller base.

If sellers vote with their dollars and take their business elsewhere, there will be nothing to sell and therefore no buyers.

Unfortunately, that will not be the end of eBay Inc because they would still have PayPal which is trying to dominate the web (and now mobile) payments industry.

Hopefully Google and a multitude of other free market payment alternatives will supplant PayPal and soon, eBay and ALL of it's seedy relatives will be nothing but a dim and fading memory.

Dick, we already live in that world. Look at Ebay's product mix. It's now a joke, thanks to JD. They are in FULL FAILURE mode & getting desperate, even had a call from Ebay begging me to try a store, try free shipping, Blah Blah Blah, How bout this, you REGISTER your customers WITH REAL INFORMATION. When you report someone to Ebay for invalid info THEY ARE NOT EVEN SUSPENDED, Ebay lets them "correct" their error. I thought JD's awesome 3 year plan included a year for the sellers, where they would improve their lame buyers & eliminate criminals, when is that gonna happen?

''How bout this, you REGISTER your customers WITH REAL INFORMATION. When you report someone to Ebay for invalid info THEY ARE NOT EVEN SUSPENDED, Ebay lets them ''correct'' their error.''

The added insult to injury is that for the few buyers who actually do manage to get kicked off of the site for heinous violations, because information isn't verified, they can always just open another unverified buying account and start causing trouble and scamming all over again.

I suspect that many of the draconian policy changes/standards would invoke far less ire among sellers if the ebay corporation did its part to clean up fraud and scamming on the site (verifying buyers names, addresses and forms of payment is a start) and did its part to improve the quality of traffic on the site.  As long as the ebay corporation fails to understand and acknowledge that the health of the corporation is inextricably linked to the well-being of the ebay community, they will continue to have serious problems.

There’s nothing wrong with a system that fairly rates both sellers and buyers; but, as usual, eBay’s dysfunctional executives, or software engineers, or whoever, have got the algorithm wrong in that the parameters used for such rating are anonymous, and petty, apparently.

And, why does eBay bother “protecting” buyers from such supposedly “poor” sellers, when they knowingly—and by very deliberate design—allow unscrupulous, professional, sophisticated-shill-bidding sellers, using nominal-start auctions, to run rampant, defrauding buyers right, left and centre, the world over? Just so that eBay can get a higher FVF or, in many instances, actually get a FVF, period!

Give me a break; none of this latest nonsense is for the benefit of buyers, if anyone can work it all out, I have no doubt it will be found to be calculated to benefit eBay.

eBay: ‘Dead man walking’—and deservedly so.
PayPal: Systemically dysfunctional to the core.

eCrater.com and Bonanzle.com are second and third under eBay on Power Sellers Unite site counts now. eCrater is soon going to break the 3,000,000 mark. Granted, eBay is way beyond that, but these two sites are growing by leaps and bounds. I sell on both sites and also on Etsy. I have had fantastic results on eCrater. I am a fairly small seller, but do have over 700 listings on eCrater. I have also had many sales on Bonanzle. I am very pleased. My sales have been pleasant and non-anxiety ridden. Please go to these sites and look around and open up a store. There is no reason in this world why we should have to play such punishing games. That's not what it's all about. It is all about making sales, keeping your customers, taking very good care of them, and we all know how to do that. You don't have to leave eBay totally, just move some of your inventory to the other sites and see how it goes. eCrater has a great relationship with Google.

AND eCrater.com is FREE. Bonanzle is very, very reasonable, so is Etsy.

eBay is really trying to get rid of smaller sellers, it's as plain as day. It will just get tighter and tighter and tighter, so you will eventually give up. It is best to get established on another venue before you are forced out.

In my mind's eye, I see Mr. JD saying, ''Run, run, as fast as you can, get out of here'' as he flicks his hand at you.

We deserve better!

Dang, it is over ! I now believe for 100% sure, John Donahoe is mentally ill, or sadistic or really does want only sellers who list thousands of items per month.

These standards are FREAKING ridiculous ! Demote us ? 4 of the 1 or 2 ratings out of 200, 300 ratings and your demoted ? I think eBay is just toying with us, I think they get pleasure making these ridiculous standards and enjoy watching us brutes for punishment try to keep up with it !

I can't believe I cannot find a way to make money and leave eBay for good as a seller, buyer and someone who ever told anyone to sell or buy on it !

This is torture folks, this bar is set to high ! JD must think eBay is some kind of STRICT RELIGION where he decrees standards that are not realistic ! Like I said, JD gots his millions, Meg and Pierre got their Billions, torture us small guys with ridiculous standards.

Someone please help us sellers ! JD is a mad man in my opinion with this standard. See he really wants us small people out ! The ony way to beat the low DSR's is to list thousands of items a month, so the more you list you can stay, small volume sellers are TOAST with a few unreasonable buyers !

And with the new EBAYS GOT YOU COVERED, buyers have ben unrealistic and putting me through hell the last few weeks on items the stole off of me with low bids, dinging me left and right.

This is the war of attrition to reduce the number of sellers.  Remember, nothing personal, its ''just business''.  Small and middle sellers are expendable.  JD and gang don't see us as humans with lives, they see us as numbers.  JD said recently, Our problem at eBay is that we have too much inventory. (not exact quote) So some must go and they can't touch the big boys.  They like the bucks coming from the powersellers and top rated sellers.  Everyone else can go.

The problem for all of us is they are a despicable lot. The dishonesty, the manipulation, the falsification, the spinning, the secrets, the sheer arrogance, the incessant imbecilic demands on sellers.  It's too much.

We have to emotionally detach from this evilness in order to earn money we need.  USE eBay until you don't have to any more.

Things will all be different in April when the fit hits the shan.  Not better, just different. Let's see how that all shakes out.  Let's see how many people leave eBay.  We saw in the SEC report that they are concerned about sellers leaving.  (They have an odd way of showing it.)

Meanwhile, everyone just hang in there. We're better than they are.

I HATE EBAY MORE THAN THE HEAT OF 100000 FIERY SUNS.

These standards are absolutely ABSURD. I am a Powerseller with ONE Low DSR on shipping.

I sell in a niche category so I am not too worried about "low ranking". My buyers are reasonably sophisticated, with about 40% overseas anyway.

Nonetheless, I won't be alone in the basement as almost everybody is not going to meet these ridiculous standards.

Ebay is no better than those greedy TBTF banks we were forced to bail out.

the sad part is that these Ebay Scumbag Suits are laughing at us and thinking how wonderful they are with their nice cars and nice lives.

I despise them all--THEY can only DREAM of living up to the same standards, hypocrites.

This move will drive more unique and eclectic sellers off Ebay. I still sell on Ebay but dont buy very often anymore. Ebay has been taken over by those selling very cheap, brand new products over and over.  No malice to these, but I can get flimsy new junk from China at cheapo stores like Walmart or the Dollar Store. For them, it's easy to get higher scores on product as described. for me, selling one of a kind antiques, every buyer has a different vision of the item, no matter how many pics I use. some are thrilled beyond words. Some are disappointed. Im dead selling this stuff under these new terms.
and I think Ebay is really hurting themselves
Ebay is as desperate for buyers as I was for a date in the 7th grade, with equal amounts of common sense. Ebay should make buying as well as selling a privilge.  Elevate the whole place. Automating everything in this way in an effort to copy Amazon is very poor long term thinking

So glad I quit ebay 13 months ago. The money is way better at ecrater and the stress is way less.

Ebay as a company couldn't get those figures that they expect sellers to maintain, and if I read the punishment correctly, you won't show up as well in search if you aren't perfect. What about how sellers aren't showing up in search anymore anyhow? How much more disappeared can they get?

Folks, go visit ecrater and see what a nice place it is to sell on.

Frank, the Chinese junk sellers are playing a volume game. Sure, they get hundreds upon hundreds of feedback for selling trash, but they sell thousands of items to swallow their fraud, and EBay has locked their DSR to 4.9%, so no worries there. Isn't it illegal to bear false witness, like Ebay giving these Diamonds a cheat around the DSRs? Customers culd start a class action lawsuit, stating they only purchased from these drop shippers because Ebay told them they were Ebay's best, TRS sellers?

This is what I see and I'm going to make up the numbers for the sake of conversation. That's because I don't know the real numbers and it's not really all that important.

J.D. sees he has 100 million items listed on the site from 1 million sellers. Because he's a Bain graduate, he would rather have all 100 million items listed from one seller. How much simpler that would be.

He could lay off a few thousand more front office folk, and enhance the bottom line. Right now, it looks like he has his hopes set on sellers like Buy (the next bargainland???).

That stupid schmuck has gotten into bed with a whore who fully intends to rob him. She is already pulling ebay sellers off ebay to her own site, and J.D. seems unawares of it. He better be careful playing around with Buy. If he gets in too deep with them, they are capable of stealing the whole show right out from under his feet.

He has to be the number 1 dumbass CEO I've ever seen, and that includes Ken (Kenny Boy to GW) Lay.

To keep this post reasonably short, let me say this. Many posters here are advising you to diversify and to try and set up your own web site (not that easy, but you can do it if you really try). I believe their advice is correct & true. Tomorrow, take that first step away from ebay. I have and even though it's not yet been a huge success, at least there is some promise.

With ebay, the promise is dead. Or dead man walking, as Philip would say.

Well thank you eBay for pushing me to the exit after 11 yrs... a PS, 100% feedback and high DSR's...I no longer need to be abused.  I deserve better than being contaminated by your convoluted rulings.
I love to sell and Bonanzle.com is my answer now.  I have been weening myself away from the distructive site and builting on Bonanzle.  It is growing fast...thanks eBay and to my customers/buyers that are coming with me!
We are all at choice... eBay is not the only game in town..and it certainly is not the best one...some sites treat you like you matter.

Why is shipping time and shipping cost in there? Isn't that illegal? The postal service is to blame for slow service not the seller. Boggles the mond how much eBay gets away with. The most dishonset company i have ever seen. We have been moving away and now are much happier at Bonanzle, Biblio & aliabris. Actually, Alibris looks great and i think could be the next amazon. And THEY ARE NICE to deal with!
