eBay Silences Founding 'Voices' Members

By: Ina Steiner

The new eBay team put into place last year after long-time CEO Meg Whitman retired has been slashing payroll and eliminating programs. Its latest target is the 10-year old Voices of the Community program, commonly referred to as "Voices."

eBay is ejecting the oldest members from the program, whose participants give eBay monthly input into programs during their development and pre-launch. There are 47 groups in Voices comprised of about 130 active members. Over 30 are being ejected from the program. Voices members are not paid, and some of them worked within the program for a decade to help eBay grow the site.

A source familiar with the decision to retire Voices founding members said eBay wants to focus on big sellers and buyers now as the site moves in that direction.

eBay has been giving perks to large retailers to entice them to the site, and it has moved away from investments in community by canceling its annual user conference and laying off its discussion board moderators, where both buyers and sellers gather to talk about everything from collecting and fashion to buying and selling tips.

In research for an article we published about the Voices program in 2004, some sellers explained that they stayed in Voices so they know what's coming down the road, and prefer to be in the loop on future developments.

In a 2003 eBay Chatter newsletter article, the Community Development Voices Coordinator at the time said of the program's creation, "CEO Meg Whitman decided that eBay should hear what members had to say face-to-face."

Update 8/20/09: Please see the update to the Newsflash story - I spoke with Garnor Morantes, Senior Manager of Seller Development for eBay Marketplaces, about the changes to the Voices program.

We would also consider returning but only after we received a formal apology from eBay for removing us as sellers even though we had 100% feedback, 5.0 across their biased DSR system, along with a more  then 50 percent repeat buyer status with written  acknowledgement that they made a mistake in publicily telling us we were no longer wanted on their site.

@run jd run

He should be included in the list because he has hurt many people with his disruptions and done it in a cruel monetarily discriminatory manner with unfair rules and regulations. Frowning upon and treating unfairly smaller vendors and creating a manipulated marketplace where only those with deep pockets get special treatment and can afford to survive.

All is moot anyway. He nor any mega merchants will ever succeed any further than they are today. Ebay will never survive the transformation into mega mart/costco/amazon/overstockland/whatever the hell JD thinks up on a whim as he's drinking his morning coffee. He's nothing more than an overpaid CONMAN.

Without the unique small time, mid sized to large sellers that sell the hard to find items Ebay is just a waste of web space. They can't beat the prices of other sites consistently enough to ever control the market share they have now. It's just the most foolish pigheaded plan I have ever seen.

I'm all for change don't get me wrong. I love making things better and run more efficiently. I would applaud good change but this CRAZY insane nut of a character has come up with one of the ODDEST strangest nonsensical disasters I have ever seen for a business such as ebay was.

If he was leading troops into battle with a plan like this they would shoot him.

What JD will end up doing is giving a gift to the rest of the world... it's long time loyal customer base who will gather somewhere other than ebay and a new leader will emerge.

At the end of ebay I will always be forever puzzled to death by the million dollar question though....

Did John Donohoe really think what he was doing at ebay was ever going to be successful or was it all a failure plot?

Also if John Donohoe's plans were to ultimately fail miserably then I commend him on an awesome job. His plans were tastefully orchestrated with great precision and he had many confused who made lots of noise.

hail hail the paypal competition and google stores!!

@@ Ebay is a level playing for all to sell on ....

Sorry EPMB's but eBay is not a level playing field. If they were they would allow us to sell with check or money order only. Both being Federally accepted payment methods for more then 150 years. Since we are not allowed to sell this way we complain about it rather then circumventing the policy. You should know. You circumvent their policy by asking for chks and mo's in abbreviation. You also provide a telephone number in your shipping info.

Then you complain about people who have left for the same policy and reasons you choose to cheat  with to stay in business, and then you complain about us complaining.

@pay my bills

lol, you must be bored trying to stir things up and aggravate folks. I never understand why people enjoy doing that but have fun. I'm sure someday you'll have it happen to you. All things level and even out sooner or later :)

Also there is no magic bus that is going to take you to the new ebay replacement because it is still under construction. Worker bees are working around the clock to have it ready in time for the ebay closing. Customers are transferring single file at a steady orderly pace as we speak. It's going to take some time as the line is very very long so be patient.

I'm also not a failed ebay seller. I'm doing quite well based on my past customers and my reputation but I know a loser when I see one and since the first day I heard Donohoe speak I have not invested one more cent into inventory so he's kind of holding me up a bit here and has wasted a year and a half for alot of people.

Meg Whitman made sense to me and I liked all of her changes and I was extremely confident in her plans she was a winner and helped me make alot of money. Matter of fact I didn't like ebay much until she started working there. I'm just left puzzled at what she saw in JD. I think he conned her into joining whatever crime scheme he is running or maybe they had some sort of romance? love affair?

That stuff happens!
Sleep your way to the top works for guys too ya know.

JD's plan makes me ill and has failure written in permanent black marker all over it. 100% GUARANTEED.

It's going to be very embarrassing when GM pulls out. Look who we're talking about GM and Ebay with Donohoe it's a perfect death match.

Ebay makes me ill, I've got traffic everywhere BUT on Ebay, dude. You should stretch your wings & try the other sites, where you can list free, but I guess a cheerliar like you already gets that perk eh? Did you really have to sell your car because youer Ebay sales were so bad as you said here awhile back. Remember, you were outed & we know your sales are not what you claim.

and ebayink is nothing more than a blog created after ebay realized they could not control what is being published about them. I seem to recall after AB called out a certain person who was apparently someone else that RBH was eager to post on twitter asking if ebayers wanted to blog together or something like that. He did it twice that day. What they want is to diminish the negative commentary against ebay, inc and increase the positive comments.

1) I think ebay could very well be intentionally starting to speak to AB very similar to how they talk to some of the ebay sellers who are upset over ebay. Narrow line of talk, putting out very little, easy to flip flop statements. And they could be doing it because they want to discredit them.

2) Dont forget what Richard Brewer Hay said he was going to do and what he is doing. He's a corporate blogger with a clear bias right off the bat. And only superficial commentary that brings in a few "he gets it" ears. The rest is pure PR. Instead, he seems there to dismiss, discredit and otherwise bury the other side. Hey the guy can censor whomever he wants, its a blog.

3) Some of you posters stir the pot just fine, you ain't never picked up the phone or filed a complaint. You just want to bring in all that's been done to you hoping someone gets it, someone does it for you. Well the right people dont get it. All they see is uncontrolled bowel movements with very little articulation of the issues at hand. And I'm not even sure Auctionbytes wants to say what's really wrong with this company but I am certain if AB doesn't, they will go down in flames and become a tabloid rag that Ebay wants it to be. Sometimes I wonder if the posters saying there are problems are the ones creating problems. Because it makes no sense that people are not saying they are filing complaints. When issues were coming up in 2001-2002, people were piling in talking about who they called in their state. I don't see that happening. I think what's occuring is a psychological break with people who feel they can't rise up and exercise consumer rights. Ebay expects you to react because it helps them. It doesn't help you. They want you to chew on any given issue & tear each other down because they dont want you to see what the issue really is.

4) I dont want most of you filing any complaints because you are not able to see or state what the issues are and who is the appropriate agency to field these complaints. You bring down the ones who can write complaints. Sadly that's true

5) reply to Mings reply, why do you think the time is now to contact media outlets re testimonials or otherwise. Do you really believe the media is there to write about whats going on with sellers or any issues about ebay at all? They're not. Why you think they can is perplexing.

and its my personal opinion that AB needs to start showing how these are systemic to a bigger issue. or at the very least, start keeping a running scorecard of who benefits and who doesn't from these changes and issues.

these are just vignettes

Fruity...perhaps the best thing to do is to file a complaint right here on AB. There are a lot of people out here who do complain and many may not know how or what to say in a formal complaint. My suggestion is to write a formal complaint and post it here with the appropriate info for people to find where to send it to. They can then copy the complaint and sign it, and send it off. JMO.

eBay Ink is reading this blog because they (eBay execs) are concerned about what is being said by the posters to the articles. It puts them in a very bad light for the most part.

The important thing is that they are reading things here. That cannot be denied. :)

The more they write about it, the more this blog gets read and noticed. So, please Richard, continue to write about what's going on here. A little publicity never hurts, unless you are eBay.

@ fruity

The media writes about ebay issues that affect ebay when ebay sends them canned press releases. Google. for example, has a newsfeed everyday with ebay related articles many of which do indeed reference sellers.

If sellers send these online publications emails or make telephone calls to tell them ebay is planning a phony, drummed up media campaign by carefully selected propagandist sellers, then perhaps these ebafia articles and blogs would be more balanced.

Why not offer to be a spokesperson for the truth as we see it? Email them your selling credentials, email address, and telephone number (particularly if you no longer sell on ebay). Or in lieu of this, refer them to Ina and David or to Rosalinda at Auctionguild.com. Rosalinda has been a giant is exposing ebay what precisely what it is for many years and that includes the monster that Neg Meg Whitman created to enhance her wealth.

Ebafia plans to flood the media with these phony, bought and paid for stories to create a heckler's veto so we won't be heard.

This was just a suggestion how to mitigate its impact.

No thinking, rational human being could possibly believe that Richard Brewer-Hay's pro corporatist blog represents mainstream ebafia user thought.

In addition to Brewer-Hay's rather thin resume and less than mediocre writing abilities, it's crucial to keep in mind that ebafia hired him to disseminate ebafia propaganda, keep the natives tranquilized, and to spread disinformation/misinformation whenever useful to ebafia.

Brewer-Hay was NOT hired to act as a go-between sellers and management. He was NOT hired to act as a blogging, seller advocate without a propaganda radio show. He was NOT hired to provide a blogging adjunct to the discussion boards where some truth could be posted.
He was NOT hired to be fair, impartial, or even truthful.

Don't even bother posting there. This blog and others like it that are independent of ebay censorship have far, far more credibility than a group of bent over ebafia cheerleaders sending kisses to each other or phony disagreements and complaints on The Ho's blog.

Stop blogging there. Don't participate on ebafia boards -- Auctionbytes has great boards. I refuse to participate even on on my pristine, ebay cookie free computer.

Let these phony discussion sites die of boredom just like the marketplace is.

I will only shop on ebay because best match is the greatest shopping tool ever invented.

hahahahaha ya right put that down in the most ridiculous quotes of all time book.

Sad irony is all these nonsensical changes in some way lead back to best match and the bogus reward garbage all linked to best match which knowingly no buyer with larger than a pea brain would ever use best match to find an item. Yet the brainiac Donohoe has chosen that as his default sort of choice which ensures the buyers that don't know better, don't sign in or aren't accustomed to ebay have no idea and exit after NOT being best matched. Hence overall site wide slumping sales and traffic since it's release.

My kids were ebay addicts and bought everything they needed usually on ebay at a good price. I remember the week best match started my son said Mom whats wrong with ebay?

I said what do you mean and he said I don't know but it sucks it seems like nobody is selling anything good anymore. I later learned he was stuck on the best match joke.

Like having your mommy dress you in Pink huh JD?

Apparently your IP ISN'T blocked.

Your IP number wouldn't happen to be in San Jose, would it? I seem to a recall a post last year by the now fired former head of the PR department Jose Mallabo that was raw and disgusting, and even that wasn't removed. David simply very effectively called him out.

But earlier this year someone sounding suspiciously like Mallabo used some very inapproproate language here, and that post was removed and, IMO, for good reason.

Please don't stop posting here. Every blog needs its useful idiots.

There've been hundreds of pro ebay posts here that haven't been removed so apparently you earned whatever punishment has been meted out by some extra vile bad behavior.

I'll miss your posts, though. You made the rest of us look so much smarter.

Somebody actually meant that? Seriously? LOL

Best Match has Donahoe's cooties all over it, so it will stay there as long as he does. Other sites are growing fast, and that flipping point is approaching when they'll get more hits than Ebay.

Thanks, Donahoe, for changing the face of e-commerce: we have so many more choices now ;-) That sunny day is coming, the day one good auction venue starts up, and that's the day you're finished.
