Etsy Unbundles Ads but Google Ads Mandatory for Some

By: Ina Steiner

Note: This article was originally titled "Etsy Listens to Sellers by Unbundling Ad Programs."

Many sellers called Etsy's decision in August to merge Google Ads with its own Promoted Listing ads a costly disaster. Apparently they voted with their pocketbooks, because today, the company announced a new offering that sees the two programs unbundled.

Etsy explained in its announcement to sellers, "Now when you run an Etsy Ads campaign, your budget will only go toward advertising your listings to shoppers on Etsy. Google is now part of Offsite Ads, so we'll no longer use your Etsy Ads budget for Google Shopping."

In the summer, Etsy had pitched the merging of the two programs by explaining, "Sellers can now set one budget, and Etsy will leverage its data insights and marketing expertise to optimize how their dollars are spent across channels."

The problem, according to sellers, was not only a lack of control over where their budget was spent, but some sellers said the program ate up their budget too quickly with little or nothing to show for it in terms of sales.

It was easy to see why Etsy wanted to merge the programs - as we titled our headline in August, "Etsy Helps Sellers Pay for Google Ads to Draw Traffic to Its Marketplace."

But 5 months after launching the "new" Etsy Ads program, there was a sign the company was reconsidering the move. As we reported in the AuctionBytes Blog, Etsy surveyed sellers about the program in January.

One seller explained in a comment on the blog post that they used to spend anywhere from 50 cents to $10/day on Etsy Promoted Listings, with a return of about $600 - $800 per week. After Etsy merged Promoted Listings and Google Ads: "Now it’s a $1.00 per bid and I have sold very little."

Today, Etsy said it will pay for Google Ads through the new Offsite Ads programs, and sellers will only pay if the ad results in a sale.

While the program is optional for many sellers, it's mandatory for some. Etsy explained:

"If you've made more than $10,000 USD in sales on Etsy in a 12-month period you'll benefit most from Offsite Ads. So, you'll be required to participate for the lifetime of your shop and you'll get a discounted advertising fee."

You can find more information on the Etsy Announcement board. As you go through the details, let us know how the changes will impact your Shop.

Update 2/26/2020: The devil is in the details - the cost of Offsite Ads is 15%. Here's an excerpt of an email Etsy sent to a reader (thanks for sharing!):

"Here's how it works: Our offsite advertising service promotes your items on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Bing. When a shopper clicks on an online ad featuring one of your listings and purchases from your shop within 30 days, you'll pay a 15% advertising fee on that order. You'll only pay an advertising fee when you make a sale. Plus: Our experienced team of advertising experts manage and optimize everything for you, so you can focus on the other parts of your business.

"When this service launches in a few weeks, you'll be automatically enrolled and you'll see exactly how many sales you're getting from Offsite Ads on your new dashboard. You'll start being charged later in April, but if you don't want this additional traffic to your shop you can turn off Offsite Ads at that time."

Update 2/26/2020: Another reader forwarded the letter they received - the seller is required to participate in the Offsite Ad program and will pay 12% instead of 15% for resulting sales. Here's an excerpt of Etsy's letter:

"Here's how it works: Offsite Ads advertises your items on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Bing. When a shopper clicks on an online ad featuring one of your listings and purchases from your shop within 30 days, you'll pay an advertising fee on that order. You'll only pay an advertising fee when you make a sale. Plus: Our experienced team of advertising experts manage and optimize everything for you, so you can focus on the other parts of your business.

"Your shop is a success story - you made more than $10,000 USD in sales in the past 12 months. That means you'll benefit most from this advertising service, so you'll be required to participate. You'll also get a discounted rate of 12% for the lifetime of your shop, while most sellers will pay a 15% fee.

"This update shouldn't have a big effect on your bottom line. Based on your sales this year, we estimate that this fee will apply to less than 5% of your sales.

"You'll be able to see exactly how many sales you're getting from Offsite Ads on your new dashboard, which will be available in a few weeks, and you'll start being charged later in April."

Good article on Forbes. I'm glad the Etsy advertising scheme is being noticed outside the site. But... will it make a difference? Etsy doesn't produce anything. They rely on sellers to provide goods for sale for a fee. If they could realize that a minimal fee would draw more sellers, thus income growth for the site, as well as more exposure. Instead, they raise fees and impose new ones and drive sellers away. Without sellers, they have no site. Their reasoning is backwards and it's a down spiral.

This is about as criminal as it gets. All of these marketplaces need to be targeted for regulatory control as they are stepping far outside the bounds of what is acceptable.Hardly surprising given the history of certain people there however.

Shopify is on it ... they've heard about this crap and are sending out emails to Etsy shop owners:

Etsy sellers, we have your back

Take ownership of your brand, your customers, and your profit by moving your business from Etsy to Shopify.

With Shopify, you can sell your crafts, handmade goods, and digital products online, in store, on social media, in-person, and everywhere in between. Your Shopify store is your own. It lives on your domain, reflects the individuality of your brand, and gives you full control over your marketing with all the tools to grow your way.

Many Shopify merchants got their start on Etsy, but how do you know when you’re ready to make the move?

If you read the Forbes and other articles, the problem is that Etsy thug execs do not care. They will continue to make buckets of money, no matter how much they screw us.  They are above the law.  They will never be punished for their crimes.

Anyone who lives in New York and who is familiar with our utterly corrupt politicians and legal system knows the truth.  Good luck trying to get help from The Government.  It ain't gonna happen.

Everyone who is posting their comments knows what they have to do- figure out some kind of workaround.  20% plus commission for Etsy thieves who do nothing is simply not sustainable.  You could get a better deal from Tony Soprano if you get my drift.

Hmm ... something just occurred to me; what about all the people that are doing their own promoting on Instagram, Pinterest etc?  Does that mean that their hard work in building a following and driving traffic to their shop is going to be credited to Etsy and they will now take a fee for our work?

This is just ridiculous

The reality is that Etsy has NEVER done paid advertising on and has encouraged shop owners to do their own and drive traffic to Etsy.

This new scam suggests that any purchase made within a 30 day window from any social media platform - and google is presumed to come through Etsy and they deserve to make a fee.

Fortunately, I guess, I only do about half that.  If for some reason I start to approach 10k I will put my listings on inactive until the end of the year.  Not sure if less sales were what etsy was hoping for but I am not about to pay 30% commission.

If I were opted into this already I would end my store and probably restart it again under a different name if possible, if not, goodbye etsy.

how can 10,000.00 be a success story when it is below the poverty line ?? what a bunch of BS from these crooks. people making less than 10K is already struggling to make food money and pay bills.

I believe they will be charging everyone. My sales there are well below the $10k but they already said I would be charged. I've decided, for now, I'm going to jack up my prices and see what happens. Sales will probably decline, but I have other sites to cover that. If it gets to where it's not worth my time, I'm outta there.

I sell vintage and handmade items in two Etsy shops and this new fee increase (that's all that it is) is going to wipe out any profit that I make selling on Etsy.

No shop can survive a hit like this and continue to make money.   Are we supposed to work for nothing, just to put money in the pockets of Etsy execs and shareholders??.

Here is how this plays out for me once this scam gets implemented.  You can't argue with the numbers.

I just sold an item for $40.75.  The current Etsy fees /commission for their take came to $3.70 or close to 10%.

If I had to pay them an extra 15 % for their phony advertising, that would be another $6.10 or $9.80.  As it is, Etsy claims that they get me virtually EVERY sale as it is.  Since I make less than $10K, my fee will be 15% of every order!

That amounts to a 25% "commission"!

They are really leaving many of us no choice but to go elsewhere.  How is this sustainable?    How is this thuggery even legal?  They put people in prison for less than this.

There is something more going on ... I just did a few searches on the most obscure things I could think of and guess what, there were search results on Etsy.

However, the search page when to an obscure page that had nothing whatsoever to do with my search.

Is google in cahoots with Etsy?  This is simply impossible on its own without some form of shilling.

Yes, this will put people out of business - who on earth can absorb almost 25% commission and then pay for shipping.

I opted out of Etsy emails, so never got one regarding this.  However, according to my Etsy stats, I have made over $10,000 within the past 12 months, which means that I cannot opt out of this latest Etsy money grab.  I have always considered my shop to be small fry in the Etsy scheme of things and myself far from being a ''successful'' seller.  I've been selling on Etsy for over 10 years and have grudgingly accepted all the previous crap they have thrown at their sellers.  However, I think this is the straw that will finally break my camel's back, as I already do my own free advertising on the same social media sites that Etsy intends to use and just KNOW that they will claim credit for each and every sale I have.  Transparency and honesty has never been their best point.  I have NEVER paid for advertising of any kind, unless you want to include the Google Ads that Etsy has done on our behalf, but which we still pay for through all the other fees they charge us, i.e. 5% on shipping.  I mean, what's that all about if not a blatant and greedy money grab for something they have no input into?  To say I am incensed by this latest move by Silverman and his motley crew is an understatement.  I wonder what other ''ideas'' he will come up with in the future to prove to the investors what a good boy he has been.   After all, it's not just their pockets he hopes to line, but also his own.

@FIVEPERCENT  -- try some very bizarre and obscure search on google and see what happens!  There's something very strange going on.

Its like every keyword you use creates  google results for Etsy and ITS NEVER been like that before now.

"This update shouldn’t have a big effect on your bottom line."

1) How does Etsy know this? I've just incorporated an average cost of $3 in shipping on a price-point of $22, so my bottom line has already been cut.

2) Then why in the world am I being compelled to participate? WHY should I be happy ("excited") about this, when it's going to be an additional 12% fee, but no bump in sales?

3) What is the tech behind tracking? How will etsy be tracking buyers for 30 days and linking them to my shop?

4) Are these ads for MY shop or for ETSY? If Etsy is advertising etsy, and then anyone who's clicked an etsy-brand ad and within the next month buys from my shop (via Pinterest, my own FB ads, my own Insta ads, my business card, is a repeat customer for years), I'm covering their cost of doing business.
