Etsy Unbundles Ads but Google Ads Mandatory for Some

By: Ina Steiner

Note: This article was originally titled "Etsy Listens to Sellers by Unbundling Ad Programs."

Many sellers called Etsy's decision in August to merge Google Ads with its own Promoted Listing ads a costly disaster. Apparently they voted with their pocketbooks, because today, the company announced a new offering that sees the two programs unbundled.

Etsy explained in its announcement to sellers, "Now when you run an Etsy Ads campaign, your budget will only go toward advertising your listings to shoppers on Etsy. Google is now part of Offsite Ads, so we'll no longer use your Etsy Ads budget for Google Shopping."

In the summer, Etsy had pitched the merging of the two programs by explaining, "Sellers can now set one budget, and Etsy will leverage its data insights and marketing expertise to optimize how their dollars are spent across channels."

The problem, according to sellers, was not only a lack of control over where their budget was spent, but some sellers said the program ate up their budget too quickly with little or nothing to show for it in terms of sales.

It was easy to see why Etsy wanted to merge the programs - as we titled our headline in August, "Etsy Helps Sellers Pay for Google Ads to Draw Traffic to Its Marketplace."

But 5 months after launching the "new" Etsy Ads program, there was a sign the company was reconsidering the move. As we reported in the AuctionBytes Blog, Etsy surveyed sellers about the program in January.

One seller explained in a comment on the blog post that they used to spend anywhere from 50 cents to $10/day on Etsy Promoted Listings, with a return of about $600 - $800 per week. After Etsy merged Promoted Listings and Google Ads: "Now it’s a $1.00 per bid and I have sold very little."

Today, Etsy said it will pay for Google Ads through the new Offsite Ads programs, and sellers will only pay if the ad results in a sale.

While the program is optional for many sellers, it's mandatory for some. Etsy explained:

"If you've made more than $10,000 USD in sales on Etsy in a 12-month period you'll benefit most from Offsite Ads. So, you'll be required to participate for the lifetime of your shop and you'll get a discounted advertising fee."

You can find more information on the Etsy Announcement board. As you go through the details, let us know how the changes will impact your Shop.

Update 2/26/2020: The devil is in the details - the cost of Offsite Ads is 15%. Here's an excerpt of an email Etsy sent to a reader (thanks for sharing!):

"Here's how it works: Our offsite advertising service promotes your items on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Bing. When a shopper clicks on an online ad featuring one of your listings and purchases from your shop within 30 days, you'll pay a 15% advertising fee on that order. You'll only pay an advertising fee when you make a sale. Plus: Our experienced team of advertising experts manage and optimize everything for you, so you can focus on the other parts of your business.

"When this service launches in a few weeks, you'll be automatically enrolled and you'll see exactly how many sales you're getting from Offsite Ads on your new dashboard. You'll start being charged later in April, but if you don't want this additional traffic to your shop you can turn off Offsite Ads at that time."

Update 2/26/2020: Another reader forwarded the letter they received - the seller is required to participate in the Offsite Ad program and will pay 12% instead of 15% for resulting sales. Here's an excerpt of Etsy's letter:

"Here's how it works: Offsite Ads advertises your items on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Bing. When a shopper clicks on an online ad featuring one of your listings and purchases from your shop within 30 days, you'll pay an advertising fee on that order. You'll only pay an advertising fee when you make a sale. Plus: Our experienced team of advertising experts manage and optimize everything for you, so you can focus on the other parts of your business.

"Your shop is a success story - you made more than $10,000 USD in sales in the past 12 months. That means you'll benefit most from this advertising service, so you'll be required to participate. You'll also get a discounted rate of 12% for the lifetime of your shop, while most sellers will pay a 15% fee.

"This update shouldn't have a big effect on your bottom line. Based on your sales this year, we estimate that this fee will apply to less than 5% of your sales.

"You'll be able to see exactly how many sales you're getting from Offsite Ads on your new dashboard, which will be available in a few weeks, and you'll start being charged later in April."

The title of this article should be "Etsy Thugs Rob Sellers Blind in Broad Daylight."

Great comments all around, especially the manifesto by Sapience.  That took a lot of time and thought.  Well done.

I have not hit the $10 grand mark so I have a choice, but I do not this from using my own paid promoter or Etsy ads at different times- Etsy takes credit for just about every sale that I make within 30 days of my selling something that I once advertised with them.  It is easy for me to tell where the sale came from too. So there's that.

The other thing is that with all these fees and costs, the true Etsy "commission" is going to be close to 20-30% for many sellers.  As it is now, I am paying around 15-17% for each sale.  The galleries I work with charge 50% and that seems to be what the crooks at Etsy want.

There is so much money being made by Etsy and Ebay that you'd think someone with bucks would start another platform that really serves the sellers of vintage and handmade.  I guess not.

This is insanity.  Absolutely Etsy has raised their fees.  We are now at about 20%, plus they take the 12 to 15% on your shipping as well.
Think about this:  $500 item goes on Pinterest.  You pin it there.  Now if someone clicks it and goes into your shop and within 30 days buys the item, you are socked with an ADDITIONAL $80 in fees plus whatever the shipping is.  Imagine if that is a chair that will cost $100 to ship - there goes another $12 out of your shipping cost.  All totaled, the $500 chair you have on Etsy just got $100 sucked out of it in fees plus 20% of the shipping fees.  Etsy has now outpriced itself over Ebay.  What is very troublesome is that there is no way for buyers to know AT ALL where their clicks came from.  Etsy can fiddle with all the algorithms and essentially charge you blindly whatever they feel like it.  There is no oversight at all.
This is a very bad move.

When they went with google ads, I opted out of all advertising.  The hit the max, no sales,  total waste of money.
Free shipping did not get you any better placement.  I do NOT consider having to buy $35.00 in order to get free shipping.  Especially on a 7.00  item, just a ploy to get you to buy more.
Etsy is just like ebay-money grab any possible way.

The FEE on Etsy is currently 5% on item AND postage. The Ad FEE will add 15%. That is 20% of item price, 20% of postage. If you sell w/ actual ship rate, e.g., a $10 item w/ $10 postage, you will lose 40% off the item's $10., then, another 3% for Payment Fee. That means you 'net' about $5.50 BEFORE cost of item/materials. Better to quit & get a job in Fast Food. No thanks, I'm out.

@Life During Wartime >"And it was Flavor Aid, not Kool Aid, that was served in Jonestown.  While Kool Aid isn't a healthy choice for a children's beverage, it was not involved in herdlike self-destructive behavior."

Thank you for clarifying that. I hate seeing a lovely drink that was a treat growing up, being attached to that horror. I was in Colombia in the summer of 1976 and remember that they had packets of fruit-flavored drink mix. It was horrible. If those people were having to drink that on top of the poison, that would have just been one more nastiness they dealt with that day.

More and more these different selling venues seem to expect sellers to act like lemmings, never thinking for themselves and very willing to walk off a cliff. One of the big reasons that I love eCRATER! They treat sellers like people! And they are privately owned and could use more great sellers.

I have not received this email from Etsy--although I have made much more than the $10K threshold. Now, even I know that JUST because I have not rec'd this email I won't be automatically enrolled. I don't use Etsy ads because I have tried and they do not do anything to my sales volume.  My shop is currently on vaca while I decide if I plan to ever re-open it. This is one more check in the "No" column.

I wish I could say I am surprised by Etsy's total lack of transparency here, but after 15 years all I can be is sad. Making users pay for ads, without any control over what is advertised and when, is simply unconscionable.  Using the site has always come with certain frustrations, but since I tend to drive a significant portion of my own traffic, those frustrations were something I could live with. However, this ads scheme is taking the ability to grow in directions and at a rate that we see as working for our individual businesses out of our hands since we cannot choose what to advertise, or when.
Also, since I do drive much of my own traffic, having a person get my name as a reference, then google my shop to find the link is how I get more work. Now, they will google and the ad will come up first, they will click it and Etsy takes credit for driving that customer to my shop, when in reality, nothing could be further than the truth. For me, that's a 100$ lie.
This also puts our Etsy shops in direct competition with our other sales outlets, hampering people's ability to successfully move off-platform.
If Etsy needs to raise fees to cover costs, I wish they would just be up-front about it instead of gaslighting us with lines like "We partner with you to make your business a success". A true partnership allows input from both parties, not a "we know what's really good for you better than you do" attitude. Bottom line: this should be an opt-in "feature" for those who want to use it. Forcing participation, with zero control and transparency sounds more like a mob shakedown.

UPdate: Just pulled this info from their site...

Are Etsy's Offsite Ads optional?
All sellers are automatically enrolled in Offsite Ads. After April 10, 2020, some sellers will be able to choose whether to participate.

So you have until Friday, 4/10/20 to decide if you want to close your shop or go with this program.

Here's another thought ....for many sellers who haven't reached the $10,000 opt out, etsy just shot themselves in the foot. Many of these sellers I bet maybe thinking like me will start listing more elsewhere. Sure they'll keep their  etsy shops but are going to list much less so they don't go over that $10,000 mark. I'm on Ebay and use their free listings but I'm also now going to try Bonanza and maybe eCrater. Gotta love it ... there's always away to get around things, I guess and who knows maybe these other sites will pick up the slack

....and another thought. Really need to get my head on straight this morning. So maybe many will close their shops or put them on vacation mode in April. Have thought about that already too. That might screw things up for awhile in etsyland

I reopened my shop in January and posted about 350 items just to see how it was performing. I had one sale in February, and nothing since. Now, I plan to let my listings expire without renewing them, and will be exploring other venues to list on without the baggage of listing fees, shipping fees, and now ad fees. I think when Etsy wakes up and smells the coffee, they will have sunk in the stock market and lost a lot of sellers.

All this is a result of their constant tinkering with the site and disenchanting buyers as well as sellers. Etsy used to be attractive for its focus on handmade and vintage. Now, it's almost worse than eBay.

I am using Etsy basically to downsize 50 years accumulation of vintage items. I have less than 100 items listed and in no way have I made $10,000 in a year there. I haven't made even half of that. My items are priced to sell, not to make a profit. Needless to say, I was surprised yesterday when I went to list something, I got a popup that said I would be charged for this advertising "scheme", along with a congratulatory statement. Whaaaat? In the forum, they are taking questions and comments through today about this scheme, but when I went to explain my situation, the reply box was unavailable. Up until this point, I've been satisfied with my experience on Etsy, but this is not acceptable. So do I 1) jack up prices and get no sales or  2) bite the bullet and take the loss 3) leave Etsy.

Etsy and eBay have been good places to drive traffic to the sites I actually sell on. With each package sent out, I attach a business card. I hate to lose that advertising feature, but now I don't know.

How do I get Etsy to reverse the advertising costs on a shop that isn't supposed to have them in the first place???

THIS is absolutely the most outrageous thing they've done and they've done some pretty questionable things like the shipping scam.

For those that haven't contact the authorities, how would be the time.  For anyone that has the information handy, it would be a good idea to post.

How freaking dare they spend MY money without knowing what MY expenses are with NO opt-out.  This is theft.

What's more, does anyone trust their reporting???  How on earth can we trust that the sale is coming from off-site sources.

Just another scam to make their quarter look good to investors and if we accept this without a fight, there will be more and more scams to steal OUR MONEY

Damn them

AND ... another reason this is an absolute scam is that if you google now, you will see that they advertise ENTIRE CATEGORIES which means that everyone will be hit.

They're not advertising for you or me specifically, its a slam dunk that they will steal our money.

ALL the clowns running/ruining etsy came from the same over fed Hog Farms, ebay, amazon, walmart, etc.... Every last one of them. They churn out the same greedy incompetent desk dwellers and spits them out to run/ruin all the other on line selling sites. Sellers, give it up, it's all a shill game designed to falsely bloat their bottom lines for wall street, sell off the assets and not give a damn about the real people who worked their butts off to make it a viable company. We all have experienced what happens  when you run afoul of the google god, ebay is the prime example when you do. Sales disappeared, buyers GONE, sellers closing stores in droves, and they can't even fix the so broken web site for a year now. And employees running for any job listed on LinkedIn.  And this is just my opinion Ciao

“It feels like they keep shooting themselves in the foot and driving people away, which then makes them scramble for more bad solutions, which makes even more people leave,” says Nikitinaite. “Fee increase again? People leave. Offer free shipping or you'll drop in search results? People leave. We will force you into a paid new feature? People leave.”
