I'm trying to refund a buyer, but keep getting an error message: We couldn't process your request because of a technical issue. Please try again. No mention of this on the system announcements board.
Ebay told me to refund via paypal friends and family. But this is for friends or family and the buyer is neither a friend or family and in all likelyhood I will still end up with a defect. So screw ebay they can refund and I will take the defect for their stupidity

If the refund is for a return and you refund through friends and family, then I'm not at all confident that ebay and/or paypal's systems would even acknowledge that you did, in fact, issue a refund as the refund wouldn't be tied to the original transaction.
I see lots of possible pitfalls going that route.
