Wall Street Analyst Sounds Warning Bell on eBay

At least one Wall Street analyst is concerned about the impact on eBay of the recent Supreme Court sales-tax ruling in which it overturned Quill, a precedent that protected remote sellers from having to collect and remit sales tax for customers in states where the sellers had no physical presence. SunTrust's Youssef Squali issued a report today sounding warning bells. CNBC summed up his concerns as follows:

eBay Fails to Halt Test Showing Inaccurate Info to Buyers

An eBay moderator acknowledged a problem with a test the marketplace is running and offered a painstaking workaround. He also said eBay plans a "major release" next month in order to address a lot of the problems the test was causing.

He was responding in a thread, "Are listings now product pages?" where sellers discovered that eBay was displaying incorrect information on their listings. A screenshot shows that eBay is displaying a new title for the generic product at the top of listing pages, above the seller's listing title.

eBay Tests New Paid Ads at Top of Search Results

eBay is testing a new pay-per-click advertising program. Invited sellers can run ads that appear at the top of search results; they pay whenever a shopper clicks on the ad.

eBay is beta testing the new Highline Search Ads (HSA) for two months, starting July 2, 2018 and running through August 31, 2018. eBay will provide full credit to sellers for all HSA fees incurred during the test period.

eBay CEO Devin Wenig Horns in on Amazon Prime Day

eBay CEO Devin Wenig is trying to horn in on Amazon Prime Day. This morning, Amazon officially announced the date of its much-anticipated summer shopping event - you can read about its Prime Day plans in this morning's Newsflash article.

Wenig tweeted hours later to say eBay would also host deals that week:

"@eBay will hold large deals events on the week of July 16 to showcase our significant inventory and price advantages. Expect the next wave of our brand and marketing campaign to launch as well."

Bob Kupbens Calls eBay Tech Issues Unacceptable

eBay executive Bob Kupbens acknowledged that eBay is having what he called "unacceptable" technical issues during his video presentation on Wednesday. Kupbens was answering a selection of questions sellers had submitted two weeks prior to the presentation.
