USPS Priority Mail Rates to Rise 6 Percent in January

By: Ina Steiner

The USPS filed for a 2019 shipping rate hike that spells bad news for small online sellers who rely on Priority Mail. The Postal Service is looking to raise PM rates an average of 5.9%.

For eBay and Etsy sellers, the cost is higher since they pay commission fees on selling price plus shipping costs. And they face a triple whammy, since marketplaces are increasingly urging sellers to pay for return shipping for buyers dissatisfied with their ecommerce purchase, including buyer's remorse.

The cost of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp will rise from 50 cents to 55 cents, a ... Read More

eBay Reverses Unpopular Markdown Pricing Policy for Now

By: Ina Steiner

eBay reversed an unpopular pricing policy that limited sellers who use its Markdown Manager tool. Don't look for an announcement on the seller board, however - it was posted by an eBay moderator when sellers discussed the issue on the company's forums on Monday.

The initial policy restricted sellers when creating a markdown sale event with Promotions Manager: sellers had to have an item listed for 14 days at the same price before they could create a sale. The policy was announced as part of the Summer Seller Update on May 22nd and went into effect on ... Read More

By: Ina Steiner

eBay now believes in simplifying (some would say dumbing down) the listing process and uses technology to make decisions for sellers, but it can lead to headaches. The latest example of this is eBay's practice of suggesting categories for sellers when they are listing items for sale.

In a post on the eBay boards today, a longtime seller said he has been selling the same types of items for years, however: "I now have problems selecting correct categories, as eBay picks the categories for me, which are usually wrong, and I can no longer search and find the correct category myself."

Amazon Fraud Case Underscores Problem with New eBay Policy

By: Ina Steiner

An Amazon buyer has been indicted after Feds accused him of committing fraud using 501 allegedly false Amazon accounts to place approximately 1227 orders. The government alleges he obtained over $200,000 in merchandise, replacements, and refunds by falsely claiming the merchandise had not been delivered or was damaged.

While an indictment is an allegation and is not evidence of guilt, the very idea that it might be possible for a single buyer to commit $200,000 in false claims is breathtaking to small sellers who sell on Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and elsewhere.

It's especially problematic given that marketplaces mandate sellers offer generous returns policies.

eBay Mulls the Fate of Turbo Lister and Why

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is mulling the fate of its Turbo Lister inventory management tool and may integrate it into Seller Hub and/or begin charging a fee for those who use it, according to sellers who took a new survey this week.

eBay was going to end support for Turbo Lister in June of 2017 since it was investing all of its resources into the new Seller Hub, but eBay delayed the tool's demise because, it said, "the Turbo Lister features you rely on are not yet available in Seller Hub."

At the time (May 2017), eBay said that it would no longer make ... Read More
